Is it okay to bring your pet(s) to someone's house for Xmas?

My fiancés father and step mom asked us if it was okay for them to bring their 2 small dogs with them to our house for Christmas this year.

They live about an hour away from us. We have 1 dog and 2 cats and we're having about 20 people over this year.

At first, I said no problem but the more I think about this the more it's bothering me. I've never asked anyone to bring pets over for any holiday. They normally only stay a couple hours anyways. They can't leave their dogs home alone for 4+ hours?

Would you agree to this?

Only with permission. We are pet owners and often take our pets places. Again, only with permission. Home owner / host is well within their right to say no thanks. Pet owner should end it right there.

They shouldn't ask imo. Seems like an imposition, especially if they know you have 20 guests unless the dogs were going to be outside the whole time.

Might be okay if they brought the dogs over before and they behaved and got along with your pets, or if they are small dogs that they carry with them everywhere.

And it’s a double standard because I have let people bring dogs to my house, and am truly ok with it. Those same people have invited my dog and I decline.

I have a golden retriever. Cute, friendly, fun, terrible houseguests.

And the answer is yes, as you can ask anything.

Unless they directly ask me bring my pets, I usually assume no and would not ask. It puts them in a weird position to ask because some people would prefer that you did not bring your pets but don't want to be rude and say no.

1: Did you ask the host and are they ok with it?
2: Is your dog behaved or a four legged psycho?

If the answer to 1 is yes and your dog is behaved, then sure.
If the answer is yes and your dog is a psycho, then no!
If the answer is no, then obviously don't bring the dog.

My whole family, for the most part, are dog people so to us we'd like to take them out as much as possible. Its good for the dogs to get a change of scenery too. But I understand not everyone is cool with it so it is up to the host to be ok with it or not.

As is usually the case... the answer depends. Is it ok to bring a pet announced, no. Otherwise it depends on the person, the pet, the event etc. Like my mom has a tiny chihuahua she takes everywhere. We know if my mom is coming so is the dog because she doesn't like driving at night and usually stays the night. So she doesn't really have to ask, it's just assumed she's brining it. On the other hand my sister has a massive dog who is very nice, but we do not expect to see the dog when we invite her for stuff... unless she asked before hand which has happened and we are typically fine with it.

We have 2 dogs and we do not take them to anyones house. Mainly because one of them is a total psyco, but also I don't care to lug them everywhere. They are perfectly fine staying home for a few hours or all day. We both work from home so we are with them practically 24/7... they will survive a few hours alone.

Totally depends on the relationship and how many people are going to be there. If you're having 20 guests, I surely dont want to worry about some snot nose kid feeding my dog chocolate and killing him.

I was at Disney last weekend and now apparently its OK to bring dogs to Disney. Saw about 5 fake service dogs with the Amazon bought vests and 3 dogs with no service vest on at all. Was very strange to me.

We are HUGE animal lovers but I just find this whole need to bring your dog everywhere ridiculous

Ya, I'm w this poster. At least they asked; I have no idea of your personal circumstances. Tbh, I'm kinda surprised you seem so upset as you could've said no and you already have pets yourself. I do understand that it'll be a hassle since you'll have tons of ppl coming. I would take it as a nice sign they wanna spend more time w u and your fiancée...shall I assume it's the first time they asked?

OT but you wanna get a truly stupid question that really put one on the spot? I actually had a friend ask if he needed to bring a gift for my wedding celebration dinner. SMH.

So many opinions here...I'm just going to toss in one item.

Once you're married and plan to take those week long vacations a few times a year, what are you planning to do with your dog? If there's a chance you'll be taking them to the in-laws while you're out of town...you may just want to let this pass.

It really does depend on the temperament of your dog. If your pup doesn't get along with other dogs, this is an issue. When my daughter brings her shepherd here...it's playtime for everyone. Dogs are allowed to enjoy the holidays too you know.

Will add - if you're bringing pets to houses outside the family, that's just weird.

Plenty of good input already, but I'll throw my opinion in here anyway.

Do you have a convenient area the 2 dogs can chill in? If they bring their beds, can they chill in your laundry room in their beds out of sight during the party and not bark?

My inlaws have poms, they are super well behaved, and it would be no issue for them to chill in a room for a few hours at our house.

I think being gracious during the holidays is a good move, if you have the grace to give.

Nope - overnight stay? Maybe....with permission. My best friends retired parents are like this. They want him to lock his larger dog up (who is harmless) so they can bring theirs up. They live an hour away. He refuses (and I agree with this) because his dog causes no issues and never has and does not like being locked up when people are home - understandably. So his parents come without their dog, immediately eat and then immediately say they need to get home due to the dog. He has kids - so he feels they choose their dog over their own grandkids. I get it - I would too. Now the kids are getting older and don't want to go and visit them - and they get mad, but hell they barely know you except you show up to eat a meal and leave 3-4 times a year.

Agreed, some dogs would be A-OK. it all depends on the dogs, the situation, and the setup. Not all guests would be OK with it though. And 20 people is a lot of people. Unless all dogs involved are super mellow, it's a recipe for some chaos.

We always ask if we can bring our dog if we are going to stay with family. especially if its something a decent distance away and we arent going to be able to get back to him to let him out/feed him.

IMO, i wouldnt pick this fight. But, ive seen your threads before, so i know you will.
