That is a good plan. We rented cars for all of our trips. Liked having the flexibility to do whatever we wanted, and Waze works great over there.

We’ve been to Rome a couple times prior to COVID and the suggestions you’ve received in this thread we would agree with as well-Piazza Novova is lovely and Trastevere is so quaint and away from the crowds. Our most recent trip we stayed at Brunelleschi Luxury Holidays in a Luxury Apartment with a rooftop terrace. It’s near St Peters Basilica. We loved the location as it’s within walking distance of all major sites so didn’t need to take public transit, etc. Have a wonderful trip.

Thanks. It's not anytime soon. Going in May. Still need to buy air tickets. Cost jumps by +/- $2000 almost. (For 3 people). Cheap tickets I probably missed already, but now they are $2k up, waiting for them to drop by $1k hopefully.

Great suggestions thus far, although personally I prefer hotels to airbnb in the city. The benefit of a good concierge and not having to do dishes, vacuum, etc. means you have a lot more time to explore.

Playgrounds are frequent in most areas of Rome, but the real place for kids to play is on the piazza, around the statues and fountains. In May, chances are you'll be eating outside and you'll see (and hear) children running around until all hours, especially on the weekends. Of course this is more prevalent in the summer months, but the piazza is the gathering area of the local community and that is where everything happens.

One area to consider, whether for hotels or airbnb, is Pinciano to the north of the Borghese gardens. It's removed from the tourist trail and there are plenty of good restaurants and several good hotels. It's an embassy and museum district so safe, but not cheap. Several hotels there have pools, which may be important for your family if it's hot and you've been walking all day.

Rose Garden Hotel is nice. Between Salario and Municipio I.
Many things are within reach on foot.
From the Spanish steps to shopping.
Horse drawn carriage rides charge tourist prices!
Careful by the Vatican. Gangs of beggars in operation and they harass you unless stopped/spotted by the Police.
There was a city tax to pay upon departure from the hotel. It came to €27 for 3 nights. That was some years ago.
The metro (train station) is not too far either by foot. There is a patisserie by one of the stations. They do the best cannoli known to mankind. Better than the ones I have had when in Hoboken. Cannot remember the name of it though.

Worth mentioning Rome has an underground train system also which saves a lot of walking getting around the sights.
