I have to agree with Ronin, a paper filter that is designed to last 12,000 or more miles must be increadibly thick and restrictive and manufactured as cheaply as possible. AFE removes many of those layers, the filter is much thinner than the stock pleats and uses more costly materials. Consolidated it's not a panel filter like you are thinking, but a much larger element with a lot of restriction. The stock filter is much larger than even the aftermarket cone filters that we are used to, and or less than $90 it's worth a try if you are so skeptical, and if you don't like it sell it. I wasn't expecting much either but it's doing what it advertises.

Who said anything about the engine blowing up? We don't want contaminants in the engine.

Put my filter in today. Power gain... who cares. I couldn't tell a 10hp difference on a 400+ hp engine anyways.

But, it does have a nice grunt to it when you dip into the throttle. That alone was worth the money. That and knowing I'm flowing as much air as possible given the stock airbox.

Just installed mine today. I definitely like the sound. The engine noise is a bit louder, especially when you're hammering it. Not sure if I can feel the power gain, either, but that's really not the point. I'm hoping some air scoops will be additive. Every little bit counts.

Hmmm...installed the 'dry' version, and really didn't feel or hear a difference. Of course, you aren't going to really feel 10HP and I have the Eisenmann Race on, so I can't hear squat other than that anyway.

Worth it? If you wanna know your flowing more tahn stock sure. Combine this with the RPI scoops and it meets/beats the Gruppe-M in the $:HP ratio (it loses in the bling battle though).

Anyway, my 2 cents...

is this easy to change out to take the car to the dealer, or would it be something that you would not have to worry about??

Installed mine as well. Installation was piece of cake.
I didn't really drive around after the install but when just revving up, engine noise is alot meaner.

Ok just finished installing mine. When the stock filter was on I had no clue what that little piece holding it in place in the back was (was doing it in semi dark light) I was trying to pull it off and thought i was gonna break something lol. But didnt. It was very easy to oput on even for someone like me, who knows nothing about these things. I did however manage to put it on the wrong way, then i lined it up with the stock one and put it back on. Just to make sure, The thinner side goes towards windshield correct?
All in all, took about 40 minutes to do cuz it was my first time. Would be able to do it again in 20. Revved it up a bit, but didnt go above 3000 since car was still cold and i was at work. Will try it later and let u guys know what someone whose clueless about these things thinks. lol.

Tomorrow exhaust comes on. Now that should make a very noticeable difference

Just installed mine and took the car for a spin, definitely sounded meaner as mentioned by others. Curious to see if it will have any impact on MPG for me.

coasting

Just installed mine tonight. This may sound a little weird, but the car coasts a lot more when you're off the gas. Before when I got off the gas, the car would slow pretty substantially as if I were on the brakes. Now when I let off the gas, it seems to coast more. This should translate into better mileage. Pleasantly surprised.

That and the awesome "voooosh" sound as the M V8 does unspeakable things to the unsuspecting air

Is the AFE filter the only one on the market or is there another one to compare?

I would bet that even after other aftermarket filters come out, we won't see any real difference between them. I think the main advantage is dumping the stock restrictive multilayer paper/charcoal filter.
