SES light... Now Engine Replacement

OK... I had to register and see if anyone has heard of this before. Two months ago, I had the SES light illuminate on my 2012 M3 with 6000 miles. Like others have stated, the car ran fine, but the light was on. The first time I took the car in, they replaced the secondary air valve and left off some fasteners scratched the micro filter covers up with an air ratchet amongst other sloppy workmanship.

Fast forward to today... The dealer has had my car in twice, most recently, for four weeks. They cannot find the issue causing the SES... It's apparently a restricted flow of the secondary air on one cylinder bank. They've replaced damn near everything, but cannot find the issue.Their claiming an obstruction within the cylinder head such as a casting flaw or foreign object.

Finally, they wanted to replace the cylinder head (which I was not in favor of) but could not because none are available in the US or Germany. Soooo, now they are wanting to replace the ENTIRE ENGINE!

Unbelievable... There's a lot more to the story, but I'm out of time. I'm not in favor of this option.

Four days ago, I wrote an email to BMWNA. As of today, I've heard nothing back. So, the dealer has apparently moved forward with the swap and left me to deal with the company.

Alright... Time to meditate.

I will take your new engine and you can have mine

That's great that they are doing that. You'll be happy in the end.

They're replacing the engine..I've read other members had to fight tooth and nail to get them to replace their lemons.

That's one of my concerns... I bought this thing new, not pre-owned, so that I would have an unmolested M3. Crazy part is, the car ran perfect.

Anyone who has performed engine swaps knows other things can happen during the process. After their first attempt at replacing the secondary air check valve and leaving things undone and damaged, who knows how this will turn out.

Ask them to put a stroker motor in, and turn it into an upgrade!

Its not like the dealer is building the engine. It comes built from BMW...should be pretty straight forward.

In the older cars, the lining of the SA hoses used to crack and fall off potentially plugging the SA system IIRC (or was that the idle air system?). That sounds like something you could be suffering from. BUT, you car seems too new. They seem to have solved the issue on the late production cars and it usually happens after some time/miles. Also, it sounds like they have replaced the entire SA system at this point?

Tough call re resale value.

Just in case you didn't already know this: The carfax has pretty detailed information regarding what was done during service (see attached on my car).

Yes... They have replaced the entire SA system. I believe that it's something foreign that entered the system when they replaced the check valve and hoses.

Dealers trying to tell me it's a casting flaw... I don't believe so. If that we're the case, I would have had problems sooner.

This is one of my concerns... An acquaintance of mine worked for a dealership and said this service info is readily available.
