Z10. Green is finally hot...!

A two-seat BMW to be called the Z10 ED has been planned. According to those close to the project, the Z10 ED will be an advanced green supercar that will showcase BMW's engine power technology without compromising the environment. It's the product of the company's secretive Technik division which was responsible for bringing to life such cars as the Z1 and the Z8 straight out of its workshops.

ED stands for Efficient Dynamics which is a package of BMW's fuel-saving systems combined with enhanced performance. The Z10 ED will be an exhibition of new advanced technologies, body construction techniques and drivelines. For example extensive use of aluminum chassis components and carbon fibre should help the car weigh no more than 1,400kg (3,086 pounds). Integrated door frames and sill panels are being explored for the car. Technologies that work well will be used on lower-end volume models.

A new straight-six high-pressure turbo engine is being researched to work alongside a lithium-ion battery. The engine takes advantage of recent developments in turbo charging, direct injection and thermal technology to garner copious amounts of power from its small size. A power figure of around 400hp (298kW) is what can be expected. Brake regeneration technology will be applied to save and store energy inside the lithium-ion battery.

Price estimates for the Z10 ED hover around £80,000 (US$113,000) in today's money and production numbers will be very limited.

Am I the only one that thinks that thing is ugly. When it first appeared (a year ago?) I thought it was gross and still do. Obvious photo shop too

i actually think that is pretty gd looking... imagine that, MR, V8 or V10

seats for 2.... BMW's R8 fighter !! Maybe its just me but, I think every car company shud do a MR supercar cuz its like a pride kinda thing. A MR supercar shud be like the essence of all the company is capable of. BMW is obviously capable of a lot why wont they make one ?

I mean Honda's experience and know how in F1 made NSX which I think is amazing especially NSX-R, and Audi made R8. Honda and Audi are both fairly mainstream company and they are capable of that. BMW proved they could power one of the best super car out there (McLaren F1) now its time for them to actually make one !

they're nothing but bragging rights. they don't make financial sense for the business. they cost a lot of money in R&D, and most of the tech usually gets implemented in the mainstream models one way or another. with the current economic state, releasing a supercar would be crazy for BMW. audi has vw, porsche, and lamborghini to work with, so a supercar is more of a collaboration using existing supercar tech and improving it. i'm sure it's less expensive, or at least less risky, for VAG to make such a move.

And by the way this car is by no means green. It's based off of the twin turbo I6 in the 335i. Come. On.

Yes it'll be efficient compared to the competition, and I'm sure the extra tech they're throwing in like stop/start will help boost some MPG but it is surely, by no means and by no definition a GREEN engine.

I find all the hype a little absurd.
