I think the S55 will be special since the N55 is not a bad start. No one thinks the S54 was a bad engine as it was based on the M54. Pretty much every M3 engine was based on an AG engine expect the S65.

Lord. I do wonder how many people that complain about turbo lag have actually driven a car with the N54, N55 or the S63. They behave almost identically to large displacement NA engines. BMW has made miscues in recent times. Their turbo technology, however, isn't one of those areas.
I've own[ed] both. The Nx turbo engines are incredible, some lag and a bit breathless where it matters, but certainly best in class. Problem is, a bespoke NA M engine is on a different plane.

The new cars will be fantastic - but had M added direct injection (better mileage and more torque) to the S65 and plopped it into the forthcoming, lighter chassis ...

...that would be a car w/o critics.

Latest info suggests the M4 will be there with the M3 in a combined January debut. Ordering dates, production dates, and delivery dates are not yet being released.

It's not the performance of the e9x M3 that made it legendary it's the experience of it. It's an exciting engine from just the feel of it.

A sad day. Very sad day. The end of an era. 14,000ish E92's not bad.

It has been and continues to be a great car that brings a smile to my face every time I see it. Sad to see them end, but if I don't say it Id be lying. I'm very intrigued to see what the new model will be offering...

Instant classic! These are such huge shoes to fill and while we eagerly await its replacement, I don't think you'll get the nearly unanimous accolades that the E9x has gotten vs direct competition and more expensive cars. Its so rare that 95%+ of enthusiasts, race drivers, and publications can agree on one thing and only a few cars in history have fit that bill.

Just saw the R&T article (similar to conclusions from other publications) that they'd take the old 328i vs the new. When the base car isn't really improved, going to be tough for the M variant to as well, especially when the best part (N/A racing engine) is taken away. Have to laugh when the article says that "It's no longer BMW, it's now BmW"
