It is possible to make money on a car. But pretty rare.

I bought new a 2013 Subaru STI for $34K. Had it for 4 months and then gave it to my brother after his vehicle was stolen. 18 months after initial purchase with 15,000 miles my brother sold it for $35K. Because the new model is even more fugly than the 2013. lol.

It's to their benefit to try to get rid of that inventory now rather than hope and wait that someone from a southern state will buy and have the car shipped down. Otherwise it'll be on their books and they'll probably have to sit on it until next spring.
Indeed, reminded me that I bought our E90 in February, from a dealer on Long Island who was basically under a deep snow cover.. great time to get a stress-free deal!

Prices have been dropping rapidly since June when the f8x's started hitting the states. My CPO '11 that I bought in June depreciated over $10k in 4 months. (Although I kind of expected it) While this seems pretty bad, just think of all the e60/3 owners. You can get a same MY M5 for less than a same MY M3 with same mileage and condition.

Agreed. It is something that just works for my situation.

I believe the above argument was about never buying new and about cars loosing bunch of money. No one really pays MSRP for these cars and depreciation isn't as bad as this thread is making it sound like.

Most of E9Xs production run was during economic downturn and dealers were willing to work with customers to turn inventory.

Yeah, cars like the BMW 1M are rare. I think you really need limited production numbers for a car to have a chance to appreciate.

Sold Aug 2012 for $60K here on the board.

All of my BMWs have been weekend cars and I believe the M3 had around 6K miles when I sold it.

Similar story with my previous 335i Coupe...... bought it at ED invoice sold it 2 years later for what I paid for it.

There are others who have done this many times.

I travel for work quite often and picking up a car while in Europe doesn't cost me anything extra.

Can you produce some evidence, otherwise cool story.

It not...its total

The method he describes is impossible for anyone to duplicate. No one gets that discounted a car you have to friggin threaten your sales person with bodily harm to get a crap deal.Plus ,the amount he drives is not even worth owning it...6k in two and a half years? Why? Impossible to duplicate his situation without inside contacts/family at a dealership and a never drive lifestyle.

Also someone mentioned to write off the depreciation in a car....not possible unless you do it illegally some how. The depreciation is its most severe on any car in the first two years. I bought 2011 for 55k in 2013 it was originally MSRP over 75k someone lost 20k and that's all there is to it. From a financial stand point buying new is crazy. No one should ever do it from a financial stand point. However, if you are going to buy it and keep it tell the wheels fall off then it doesnt matter and at least you know it was broke in correctly etc.

Ya, prices have absolutely tanked. I remember a year ago brand new fully loaded 2013's were selling for around $70k

They are now available with less than 10,000 miles for under $50k

2011 M3 Convert

I just got a CPO 2011 M3 Convertible totally loaded with almost 40k miles and has maintenance until 100k for 42k. Not too bad I don't think.

Not sure what evidence you are looking for. Search my threads you will find the stories of all of my cars. Many people buy cars at ED invoice price and i am not sure what evidence you are looking for. I am also not here to prove my self. I've been on this board for a very long time.

News flash….. No one paid $75K for your car….. This is the sad thing about people who buy used cars and think they got a good deal.

Yes, I don't drive my cars much and yes I travel quite a bit hence free trip but regardless, I would of rather buy your car new for around ~$65K (for a car with $75K MSRP) than buying a used car for $55K like you did

Especially in 2010 dealers were doing whatever it took to sell cars. I did not do much to negotiate and gotten help from the other forum members.

ED cars at the time did not come out of dealer allocations and it was an additional car they have gotten credit for and gave heavy discounts.

Here is my order thread:

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=361487

Regardless, enjoy your cars people.

None of this works today with the new M4 as ED cars are now coming out of dealer allocations, dealers have very few M3/4 allocations and don't offer the huge discounts they used to offer for E9X cars.

I'm a dealer, here's what cars are doing at auction. This would be wholesale value (what it costs a dealer to buy one if they don't have access to lease returns form BMW). I'll try to update this again in a month or so.

It's against your TOS w/ Manheim to post that. Just saying. Signed former Manheim employee.

It is kind of nice tho. Some of these lowballers may get a reality check. No one is going to sell you a car under auction value unless they are a mouth breather.

The guy who made money on the ed flips failed to account for sales tax, costs of travel (somebody paid for this). Of course guys who bought Z8s and Ford GTs new saw thier cars go up in value.

I made 3k on my totalled 2008 M3, paid 42k, got 46k after a flood totaled car a year later. I lost 11k on my 2011 M3 (paid 50k, used up warranty and drove to 50k miles, traded in for 39k.

The E9x market will be just like the E46 before, drop drop stabilize, lower mile cars will be mid to high 20s, with high milers in the teens...

Does Manheim ever rate the condition as "above"?
