Its overpriced but not extremely. The 135i can be expensive if you steer away from unnecessary options. But you are still getting the 300HP TT performance.

I like the 1.
But it'll be hard for me to see someone driving it without thinking they had spent a lot of money for a smaller, lighter and fast Bimmer - which I suppose makes "some" sense.

Hell, if I (or anyone, really) could afford it...why not, right?

i just configured a 135i like my 335i and it came out to 45125.
A 335i comes out to 49,xxx. About 4k more.

I don't see this car selling well in the US. For a little more you get a 3-series and the 1 series seem to have a negative status implication in my POV. Most people will spend the extra and get the 3

I'm personally glad to see the 1 series keeping up the numbers -- I didn't want some cheap poor-man's BMW wearing the badge. BMW is a status symbol and it would be wrong to put it on something <$30k. I was very disappointed when Mercedes came out with that hatch-back c230 coupe... ::blech::

iDrive? cold weather package? sound system? how are those neccessities?

i configured my 135i (sport package, leather, ipod, metallic paint) and it came out to under 40k. thats without talking down the dealer becuase the car is fugly.

so in summary i'm getting a 3400lb BMW with 300hp and 300lb/ft that goes 0-60 in 4.7, and does the 1/4 in high 12's, for under 40 thousand dollars. not to mention has all the handling characteristics of a BMW. i'll take the 4-5k savings over the 335i and deal with the ugly headlights (which look great with a $50 eyelid mod, btw).

where else can you find a car that will outrun this one, offer all the features as it does, and has a great BMW quality ride for under 40 thou?

yeah.... overpriced... right. you guys wish this car would come maxed out with options for $30k or something?.. you're dreaming. the 135i is a performance machine, not some beater.

people will buy the 135i... trust me, and the demographic will be:
1) wants a BMW
2) wants the cheapest lightest BMW
3) wants the TT engine
4) doesn't prioritize looks over performance..

the 128i will also sell like mad, simply because its the cheapest BMW they make.

now you wanna talk overpriced, lets talk about the e92 m3.

Maybe a coupel US folks consider it exotic b/c it's the first little dinky (albeit powerful) bmw to come into the US market.
Yet again, it'll be like saying an a3 [when it first came out] is exotic... but that's a gross overstatement. just a pricier golf/gti.

If you guys really want to get tickled, try to find out how much the 1-series "TI" is going to cost. I speculate that it would be more than the m3? because of all the bits and pieces to that car.

That's what I would do to get my ideal 135.

To get the 47k, switch heated seats to cold weather package and add HD radio. Comes out to 47,000 on the dot.

That's less than 4k difference between the two models, and I think it is unjustified. I'm not saying the 1 series should be fully optioned at 30k, but when equally equipped to a 3 series it should be more than a 4k difference.

And about the M3 being overpriced as well? COULDN'T AGREE MORE.

BMW is getting really arrogant with their pricing lately.

You're gonna see a ton of little prick 17-18 year old kids who own/owned Evo's STi's who drive like complete scumbags and upgrading their turbos and ecu's and what not so they can drive even more like scumbags weaving in and out and trying to race everyone in a 2 lane 40mph busy street and creating pile ups like I have seen here in the past 2 years. Not only do BMW owners/drivers have a nice sterotypical image from other drivers on the road. Just wait till they get their hands on these cars. GREAT! And if they can obtain a 30-38K Evo/STi I'm sure it wont be too hard to get into a striped 135i out the door for around the same price.

BTW. No need to flame because I'm not saying all of them. But their are plenty of them out there.

Looking at the config above it seems like the biggest reason for the $4k difference when loaded compared to the $5.9k diff in base prices is the cost of the premium package ($3300 in 135 vs $2550 in the 335). As well the $4k diff above should be more like $4.3k as on the 335 config metallic paint was not selected.

Frankly I don't see how they could price it much more cheaply then the 335 and still keep the same profit margins. In base form it is still a very well equipped car that is close to the same size as the 335 and is using the same drivetrain.

My config comes out to about $43k in the 135. But I skip navagation and the auto tranny, which saves a good chunk of change.

I'm still trying to get used to the 1-series look. I don't think it looks aggressive enough, and I think the headlights make it look too kid-like. With the costs being that high... no thanks.

BMW is getting really arrogant with their pricing lately.
BMW 135i: 34,900; 335i 40,800 (<4k)
Audi A3 2.0T: 25,900; A4 2.0T 28,900 (<3k)
Merc: N/A
Volvo: S40: $24,365.00; S40 T5: $28,515.00; S60: 30,885; (<6k and <2k)

The price difference between 135i and 335i is apparent from the base price. The fault is BMW priced the 335i coupe too high to begin with. If it's similarly priced to its peers (G37 with around 300hp) at 35k then the 135i would be at 30k.

As you can see Audi's pricing is inline with BMW's. Volvo's pricing has a bigger gap but there is a power gap of 40hp between S40 and S60 but when the power is equal the gap is less than 2k. What you get with the 135i is exactly the same offering you get from the 335i except for slightly larger interior and a different styling. Can you imagine a fully specified 135i at 30k? That will destroy competition and 3 series.

Yea, I was so set on putting the money down for the 135 then November came along and I saw those prices. So instead now I'm waiting for my 335 to get here.

135 is a nice car, but I'll be damn if I pay that much for a 1 series where I could get the super sexy 3 for just a little more.

the car IS expensive, too close in price to a 3 series IMO... 4-5k difference isn't too much esp for a bimmer.

should be 7-8k diff in price imo.

Don't forget the 135i comes with m sports bumper, m shift knobs, m steering wheel, and 6 piston brakes. All of which many people purchase for their 3 series. How much do they cost with installation? 3-4k or more? So perhaps bmw should have thrown out these goodies so the base price can start 30-32k? I think BMW included them because it wants the 1 series considered seriously.

One of the sites I found have brembo kit listed for $3360.00

Not if it matters but personally I think it should have costed 35,000 out the door with leather/sports package/comfort and powered seats. With nav and cold weather as only options.

More like the new integra gsr or type s. At this point I am a little disappointed with the new BMW. First the 3 series lost handling competition to G37, and now even with the new sportier 135i BMW can't match 350z's driving characteristic? (From Autocar) The only redeeming factor is the engine. I am still going through to pull the trigger on the 135i but I wish I can find a better deal on a cayman s. It will be a great car but I remember the good days when BMW is the king of handling for luxury automobiles.

i knew a few of these rere's that drove like they had down syndrome... 30mph zone, they would fly down at 100mph and slam on their brakes at a turn (b/c, being rere's, they obviously odn't know how to drive, and they think that speed is a true measure of skill)...

Needless to say, 2 of them (2 separate cars) died. Sucks~

I think people think it is expensive because they were hoping for it to be inexpensive. Just like the new M3, everyone is hoping it to be $60,000 loaded, but good luck with that! You will be looking more like $68,000. Everyone talked themselves into the 1 series being cheap that when it didnt happen, they were dissapointed. Its like playing the lottery, the dollar is worth the dream...
I talked to my DM about a month ago and he said the pricing is going to be higher than people assume it will be, they are not going to make as many as people think, and this is not BMW's idea of a volume car.
