I'd bet pink slips with anyone that the new M3 sets sales records. OK a couple of pre test reviews have said a couple of minor negative things. This car truly offers Ferarri speed and engine (and probably handling), comfort, looks and civility. All that at <$60k USD (likely). A winning formula. To the OP about it being a sales failure - want to bet?

I think the M3 will sell just as well due to new markets in Eastern Europe and Asia, but will sell less well in US/Euro markets. E46 M3 just had no competition to speak of. The new one faces RS4/RS5/S4/S5/C63AMG/CLK63AMG/IS-F/GTR/CTS-V/159GTA/BreraGTA(both coming to US in 2009/2010)/CaymanS/Carrera(M3 is very close in price, especially in Europe, maybe 10% price difference MAX and M3 in Europe comes stripped of options.) Also, perhaps a more focused G37, Lexus LF-A depending on how much it costs and other cars within BMW range the 135 and 335.

I don't think the US MSRP will be any less than $63,000 for an option-free version of the e92 M3, and so far all of the reviews/pre-release write-ups agree with this (MotorTrend, CarandDriver, RoadandTrack, Edmunds.com, etc).

I think the new m3 will be WORTH about 54-55K USD with most if not all options. I guess the major question is am I willing to pay 70K+ for this car because its the *new* M3.

I'm really starting to like my decision of being in the mid 20's on the waiting list at my dealer (ended up # 24). I'll have a good chance to evaluate the M3 (which includes a test drive or two) well before my turn comes up, and the whole time I'll still be enjoying my 335i.

Sadly, I agree with Swamp and Mkoesel because the U.S. car buying public is getting softer by the day.

I hear the G37 is teh hotness.

well considering Road & Track, Motortrend, and Car & Driver don't have pre-release reviews posted yet, and Edmunds makes no mention of pricing in its pre-release review, i'm curious where you're getting your numbers from.

+1 in my initial thoughts but I think he meant that many of the rags, in print and online have posted estimates of pricing. Most of those numbers I have seen have definitely supported the less than $60k USD base price. No one has said anything about an odd number like $63k.

The largest BMW market for M cars and non M cars is the US. The new M will out sell the last one here in the US. Again, I don't have a crystal ball (nor accces to BMW strategic marketing documents) but I'll still bet pink slips about the new one out selling the old one in the US. Wanna bet?

Crap, who wants my go cart stiff, rough cammed out idling, modified E36 M3 anyway....

The Swiss Price for the M3 is 103,000 CHF and 112,000 for the RS4.
