M3 Sports Wagon
Hello everyone.
I am new here, thought it would be a great place to get help with this. Here is my situation. I have a 2010 328i xDrive sports wagon, with 6 speed manual and M sport package. Someone I know recently totaled his 08 M3 sedan, has just over 4k miles on it. It has rear and side damage, engine, drivetrain, suspension are all ok. I have the opportunity to get the car for next to nothing from the insurance company, so I want to put the motor, tranny, and suspension parts on my wagon. I spoke with Dinan about it, they said it can be done no problem, just need the hood, which is in perfect condition as well. I would rather not have to haul both cars all the way out to CA, and all my local dealer service departments refuse to do the work. I don't really care about voiding the warranty either. So I was wondering if anyone knows of any very good and reputable tuners in the Chicago area where I am at that could do this work. Would be greatly appreciated. |

That would be fantastic if you can pull it off - not sure how the xDrive would deal with it though, not to mention all of the reprogramming, install complexity, ... I would give Nate or Ilia from IND a call. If there is somebody in Chi that can do it they will know.
Please keep us posted...

That sounds like a sick project if it could be pulled off ... +1 on IND since your up there.

Actually, it would probably be easier to do the body work and build a custom wagon back end on the repaired M3. You'd need a good metal fabricator but this would certainly be easier than putting the entire M3 drivetrain into your wagon.

considering you're going to use the motor, tranny, and almost everything from the M3, you're going to lose your X Drive. But all in all its basically possible.

I wish you good luck. If it works, you will have the only M3 Sports Wagon (E91), unless in some years BMW unveils "the not produced M3 Sports Wagon (E91)", so as they did with "the not produced M5 Sports Wagon (E39)". If everything works you'll have an RS4 Killer, and so, the most track orientated sports wagon in the world. I think it will work without problem. The only problem can be cosmetical, it is to get a rear bumper, but maybe the bumper of the sedan passes.

It would be cool, but it sounds like a problem waiting to begin.

IND is in Chicago and has done some amazing work in the last few years with the current chassis M3, but this would definitely take the cake!!
It would be a true "one off"! Call the boys at IND, if anyone can do it, it would be them!

Why? Money talks! If the OP is willing to spend the money, IND or any accomplished high end tuner shop can do it.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I found IND's website, will be giving them a call.
I have already spoken to several people at Dinan in length about this, they did all the research, installing the M3 engine and suspension parts is no problem, I can retain the AWD xDrive, and it can handle the M3 power with some to spare. They did mention that it would be a bit of a challenge to integrate/program the M3's computer to work with the xDrive system, but they assured me it could be done. |

Ya...but I would assume it won't be such a sleeper. OP, you plan to use the bumper and fenders from the E90? I assume the front will be a must, but the rear isn't and the rear may not fit so easily. What about the rear quarter panels? Will you have custom body work to make them "M3 Wide"? If so, that will be nuts!
