smudged paint on new car!
Just picked up my new 2008 M3 and if you look at the picture, its not that clear but right below the tail light there is a small part that has smudged paint where the light is shining at.
It looks like it might be the primer, and it looks like it was damaged at the factory or at the vdc. I found this while detailing the car. How should i approach my dealer in resolving this? I'll try to get higher resolution pics. |

We definitely need better pictures. Less tail light, more smudge, and no shadows. As you describe it though, it sounds like it's a fairly obvious paint defect, not something you caused. If so, you shouldn't have any warranty problems. Too bad you didn't catch this during delivery. How long have you had the car?

I don't know if this picture is better, but when the camera is too close the picture becomes blurry. I'm using my g/f's sony DSC-T70/P

Been there before
Had a similar situtation 3 times with BMW. And each time I approached it differently. Here's what worked the best for me. If you don't know your service advisor, go meet him/her. Tell them you are not sure if it was there on delivery or not, but based on your assessment, you think it was delivered that way. Ask them if they have a touch-up guy that could look at it and repair it so you can get to enjoying your car right again. Since it's so small it would hardly be worth 'body shop' repairs.

I don't want to have "body shop" repairs either, it can become a horror story
You can't really touch it up because there is excess paint pushed away like a "smudge", as if the paint was still wet when they installed the rear tail lights. If i bought the car from dealer A (which is a bit far from me), do you think dealer B which is closer to me would help me out? Thanks for everyone's input. |

Even though it's small and barely noticeable, I know how you feel. It sits there in the back of your mind and knowing its there bugs you. How are you going to convince the dealership you didn't do this though?

how could I have done this? it sits exactly underneath the tail light fixture. it would be very difficult for me to damage the vehicle here versus a door ding or something. ya it bugs me.

are you serious
if it takes 3 cameras and 3 pictures to convince the guys here theres something wrong then that should answer your question. just drive and enjoy the car and stop looking for the smallest imperfections. jesus |

Well, until that last photo, it looked like nothing. That last picture looks like crap. Like a screwdriver slipped and gouged the paint. I'd ask the dealer to touch it up like they would a "regular" paint chip -- in this case, remove the light, fill in the chip, smooth it down, polish it out.

the thing is there is excess paint smudged away from the body, how would you get rid of that excess paint smudge?
its as if the paint was still wet and a screw driver slipped onto it, but it didnt chip it, its more like the paint got pushed so there is excess sludgy paint does any of this make sense? |

the sludgy part is like dried up paint that got squished into a small mound, so theres no way it could look like i'm the one who damaged it. If i damaged it the paint would look chipped
