Engine stalling at idle
Hey guys, wondering if you could lend some help. I'm currently away from home traveling, and my wife called to tell me that my M3 died a couple times upon cold start. Right away I thought IACV, but it didn't sound exactly like it...
Car has been sitting for a couple weeks. Upon its first start, she said it fired right up, went through its cold cycle, then shortly after it ended the cycle, the RPMs slowly dropped and then it died. She fired it up again, did the same thing, but idled a little longer. She was able to keep it from dying by modulating the throttle. Car is a 2011 E90, 35k miles, 6MT, and has a half tank of fuel. |

Sounds like the IACV to me since I've had to do that to my car before as well.
If it's been sitting a few weeks, try charging the battery with a tender for a few hours and then give it a go. I've found that many little electrical issues that were happening stopped once I got the trickle charger and made sure the battery was always topped off. Also, and I can't say if this does anything or not, perhaps it's just me. When the car has been sitting awhile, I like to turn it on, without turning over the engine. Let it sit until the warning lights go out, and then once all the electrical system are primed, start it. It's been smoother since I done this.

Just a little update...
My wife tried it again, it fired right up and held its idle, but shortly after the warm up cycle, it started doing the rev bounce. She said it idled for a good 15 minutes until she turned it off, but the revs bounced between 600 and 1100 the whole time. The car has been sitting for about a month now, and I'm pretty sure it still has its original battery. When I get back in July, I'll let it sit on the tender for a bit, put some fresh fuel in the tank, and see how it does after that. |
