Anyone here are regular pool players?

have been playing for a long time but have never thought i would need to get my own cue, has always used house cues or friend's cues. but now i think its time for me to not be so cheap and get myself a cue also, since my friends for some reason i don't know made me captain for this years APA league all team members has their own cue except for the captain, what kind of team is that?
i am not really a hardcore player so may looking at a below $300 cue stick,
any recommendations? have been looking at mcdermott and poison only, predator is out of question with its pricing.

so, go on, lets hear some ideas.

and if any DFW members sees this thread, any place in this area when i can go buy? i have only been to Hawley's but they seem really out of stock

**well, i finally bought my first cue pics are as below.
its the McDermott Assassin with the Predator 314-2 shaft.
i really like the feel and how it gives the feedback. it was really a steal. it was cue of the month for June 2008. the only thing i dont' really like about it though is the graphics, but not really that bad though cause its not those really flashy and colorful cues. MSRP is $399 and i only bought it for $175 and a case included. well i guess that's money well spent**

When I was just a young kid I played in competitions against adults. Good times most definitely. I always used a Viking cue.

The tip is of paramount importance, and everything else is about balance and comfort. What works for someone else may not work for you. Many good pool halls sell cues and will let you rent the higher end ones for an hour to play with them and see how they work for you. Try to borrow some cues from people you know and play with those (but don't be upset if they say no - some people are touchy about letting you bang around with their sticks).

i only shoot with cuetec. i have a cue in each of my cars so im always ready to play. haha

Can't do that in TX. The heat will warp it so easily.

I played on an APA league for about 3 years. It's a great way to improve your game if you're really interested in it.

I had three sticks over the years. A lower end Viking, a Lacasse, and a "Sneaky Pete" that I used for a break stick (and for being sneaky from time to time). As stated above, the best thing to do is play a few games with various cues to see how you like them. It's not a bad idea to shop for a cue at a pool hall, because many times the owners will let you get some time with the sticks before you buy.

For $300 you can get a very good quality cue. Once you've passed that mark you're paying for the inlays more than anything. It's been a long time, but I think my Viking was only about $200. It's also very plain.

The weight of the Viking is adjustable by adding/removing slugs in the butt. It's an Ok way if you don't know what weight you want. It's a 19 ounce stick with no weights and taking it up to 21 ounces throws the balance off a little IMO. If you want a heavy stick you probably want to go with something that's designed that way instead of adding weight to a lighter stick.

i see, as i also don't need the fancy inlays. all i want is a plain simple looking cue that's great to the feel. so i guess i don't really need to spend over $300

maybe Players Cue? i think they are decent cues for the money and should be an improvement over the house cues.

yeah, just go for the non-fancy ones. I really loved my Meucci, but it was expensive at the time..........because it has some intricate designs....

maybe i should sell it since it doesn't get used as much as i'd like......

Here's a decent sneaky pete for under $300.00. I think that meets your criteria, although it's a tad bit more decorated that most sneaky petes are.

i play occasionally. my dad plays all the time, though. he recently joined APA and is doing fairly well. he shoots with a predator (i think p2 series, im not sure) and a 314-2 shaft. i shoot with a cue / shaft combo made in pampanga, philippines
