I hate potholes....

Yesterday, I was driving back home and there were numerous potholes ahead. I tried to dodge them but since I was on highway with speed around 60-70mph, well I couldn't really.

Results?

Both left front and rear tires were gone. By the time I stopped, no tires were left at all with only the burnt smell.

My dealership's service department is closed on weekends so I just called BMW assist to tow the car there and now I am without a car and just worrying if there were any damages to the suspension and so on.

This was not my first time too. When I had an Audi, same thing happened but only only 1 rim was damaged, not both.

Just ranting how much I hate potholes...ugh...

Now I have to deal with the rim/wheel warranty company since I am 1000 miles away from the original dealership that I bought it from so hopefully I am covered even if I fix it here.

Be safe guys.

Thumbs down

Man that really sucks. I broke a C300 rim in Toronto and I went through hell trying to get the city to pay for it. The wheel costs like 400 something, but I just wanted the city to notice that such a thing is going on and they should fix the damn roads :/
-
The time it took me to write the letters and call the city was much more than $400 worth but like I said I just wanted to make some noise b/c there roads suck!
-
Good luck,

I feel your pain.
Back in 2002 I owned an e46 M3.
I hit a pothole just a couple of minutes from my house and blew a tire.
Of course there is no way the mobility kit will work on a blowout, so I had to wait two hours for roadside assistance and I felt like such an idiot because I was so close to home.
I really wish they would fit doughnut spares with these cars.

I lost two front tires due to "street cut"... I was going 40 mph and all of a sudden street cut all the way accross from right to left, and every car was getting hit...every car! There was no sign to "Slow Down" or "Slow Roadwork Ahead"... nothing! Such negligence. If a biker hit that street cut, it would be a deadly accident for sure. I don't know what happened to this country... This street cut was atleast one foot deep... Got my insurance pay for both tires from tirerack minus deductable.

My friend NYPD officer said, next time I get damage from pot hole and such, I have to notify the city and they will pay for damage. Here in NYC we have general phone number for New York City hot line, you call for just about anything... number is 311.

Here in NY we have an abundance of potholes. I have perfected my driving skills to avoid every single pot hole. First you have to watch behavior of cars in front of you...3, 4 cars in front, and if one of them hits a pothole you will see it and would have enough time to react. I anticipate a pothole every single mile, no relaxation, just constant anticipation and readiness... makes it a stressfull drive but could be fun sometimes, and not hitting pothole is priceless!

... one day every car will be connected via wireless, and if one hits a pothole it will send a message out to all cars in area, and you would get a warning on your i-drive and get ready to avoid the danger... just like we get "real time traffic report"...

Well at least the M3 doesn't have runflats. I've ruined several runflats by hitting potholes but have yet to ruin a non runflat tire.

Here's one for all the Cali peeps.

Anyone know if you hit a pothole, but no tire/rim damage, and it throws your car out of alignment? Would this still apply?

NYC streets and low profile tires with sport suspensions are not a match made in heaven. My 335i was essentially undrivable in NYC with the RFTs. I replaced them and it was a big improvement but I have still destroyed one rim and three tires.

Aftermath of a pothole damage....

Here's the story:

About a month ago, on a highway, I hit a pothole going about 60mph.
Both my left front/rear tires and wheels were damaged.
Here's the thread: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...hlight=pothole

Luckily, I had the wheel/tire insurance when I purchased the vehicle.

The dealer fixed them in no time and assured me thatthere were no other problems.

Yesterday, just driving back home, I hear a loud noise coming from the backside of the car. I stopped to check if something was hanging and nothing was there.
I hopped back and try to drive but the noise came too loud and I had to stop and the left rear of the car were sunk down.

I called the BMW assist and they towed my car.

Here's my question/concern.

Dealer said that the bolt holding the suspension to the car was damaged last month and they didn't detect that. Now, the damage is even bigger. Driving shaft and strut bar are bent as well.

Can they be held any liable for this issue or is it 100% my fault?

Sigh...Stupid potholes...

That is totally the dealers fault. I would have a fit if they said that they weren't paying for it. I would ask them why you paid so much money for insurance on your wheels and vehicle and they are trying to put this off on you. But by the sounds of it they have already admitted that they made the mistake of not catching that before so they probably understand that they must correct their mistake. Damn potholes

I think the wheel/tire insurance would apply just to the wheels and tires? And if there was other damage to the car, then your regular insurance would cover that? That's just my logical thinking on this.

Potholes are the worst and that insurance is so key these days.

Correct. Hitting a pothole is no different than hitting another car for insurance purposes. In your case, you had a single-car accident, and you have two different kinds of insurance (tire/wheel and collision).

It is too bad the dealer missed it the first time, but it is questionable whether driving it caused the damage to get any worse . . . likely not. If it did, that means the damage was probably difficult to detect the first time. Either way, it' a wash as far as the dealer is concerned. It's between you and your insurance company, and it's NOT the dealer's responsibility.

Paid $750 for mine upfront when I got my M3. I have 19" PS2's. It has paid for itself already....had to replace two tires ($450 a pop) due to nails. So I'm already +150 if you think about it in the context of cost vs tires I've gone through.

The tire/wheel insurance though only covers road hazards, and you are expected to replace the tires yourself due to normal wear.

It explicitly states the warranty will not cover damage if your treads are significantly worn, so just something to be mindful of.

In any event, with the roads up here in NYC, I knew I had to go for the warranty, especially riding on PS2 19"....the roads are a disaster and a half up here.

UPDATE:

Here's the deal. I picked up the car today and guess what happened....
Subwoofers are broken now...They have no idea what caused it. Is it just bad luck or something might have caused this? I leave the car at the dealership for few days and finally they fix the suspension problem but subwoofers are broken out of nowhere. It was working fine before.

Secondly, I'm a CCA member and they told me that we get special pricing on the parts + 20% off labor. Is that true?

They gave me an estimate that Wheel carrier, rear, BM33-30-2-283-541 would cost 507.13 normally but for me it cost 395.56.

I was so eager to pick up my car and now the subwoofer problem is just causing another headache...

I'm leaving the country in 2 days so I guess I have to fix it when I come back in 3 months..sigh...

That's retarded. How can subwoofers break? The voicecoils are shot? How do you know they are "broken"

Sorry man - I hate thinking that someone had fun with my baby while it was in the shop. Even if the miles seem right, you never know what goes on (radio blasting?). My buddy worked at a dealership for a while (nissan not bmw) and he told me the way the guys treated the cars - scary stuff.
