Those boats are sick. I was in a 37' Hustler cat that had twin supercharged 600cid V8's running meth and 22lbs of boost making a combined 3500+hp. We 'cruised' at between 75-85mph waiting for the oil temps to come up before the throttleman could wind up the motors. It's just sick because once the blowers were at full boost it took less than 9 seconds for us to go from 'cruising' speed up to 137mph. I know that doesn't sound that fast compared to these blown M3's, but it's totally different on the water than it is on asphalt. I don't know what his fuel economy is while WOT, but apparently the best he can do cruising is 'a gallon a mile a motor'. When I asked how that compares to a gas turbine engine (Miss Geico is turbine powered) I was told that they make the V8's look like hybrids.

Holy crap! I saw the old Miss Geico on her trailer once and couldn't get over the billet props... IIRC someone said they were 50k a pop! Boats like these are in a completely different league!

Yea they sound incredible in real life. My neighbor has one and we saw a huge rooster tail and were like what in the hell is that.. Sounds like a chopper. This is his monster. I heard the paint job cost over 100 k

The props on the Hustler were about $8K each, but they have to be kept sharp (you could easily cut yourself with them) and that obviously costs money every time you send them out. Granted the turbines probably use a little bigger of a prop, but I would guess $20K max. They just keep a lot of them around depending on the waters.
$100K for the paint job is totally doable. I have heard of worse. It really makes the idea of buying a brand new Lambo sending it to Underground Racing for their TT kit for $100K seem like cheap speed.

About 12 years I was involved with a friend of mine in a 36 ft Douglas Skater with Mercury 900 Poker Run engines with #6 drives and it was one of the fastest poker run boats of that time being radared at 152 mph with 5 people on board.I will try to find pictures of it as it was the days before digital cameras so I will scan them.
Fast powerboats are a great way to take care of any extra cash that you might have lying around These new boats now are in another league compared to what we played with. The 38 Cigarette Top Gun that I crewed on. Boating was always fun! |
