I am not here often enough to know, but...

Was the question of whether or not the fob recharges when inserted in the slot for those of us that have CA resolved?

I was told by my dealer that it does, but I saw some discussion here that it doesnt.

Who is right?

Your dealer is wrong...the M3's equipped with Comfort Access have a replaceable battery in the keyfob, and therefore, do not get charged when inserted in the slot. When the battery needs to be replaced, a message should appear on your iDrive screen.

The manual says if you have CA not to put the key in the slot ever.

Still seems ambiguous. Even rechargeable batteries don't last forever and need to be replaced. Makes no sense.

Right, but it is indeed the case that CA fobs do not have rechargeable batteries while the non-CA fobs do. Why is this? Not sure, but I suppose its because BMW figures people won't want to be inserting their CA into the dash to recharge it since they will likely just keep the key in their pocket all the time. Kind of lame I guess but it is what it is.

But FWIW, wife's CA has not needed a new battery yet. I think they last a long time if you don't use the buttons on the fob very often, which makes sense.

I'm just wondering where the "definitive" proof is of what you have stated. Without a technical bulletin scan or a definitive quote from an owner's manual your post is still speculative along with the numerous others like it...no offense.

You need to put it in the slot at least right before getting the car serviced. The service department reads the information on the cars condition from the data stored inside the key's memory. The key must be in the slot for the car to send this info to the key.

I am only making one assumption and that is that the system has not changed from how it is implemented currently and has been in the past on the e9X 3-series. There have been many discussions about this on E90post. You won't likely find any current ones since it is now widely known and accepted as fact. Anyway, from those discussions, I am certain that I recall that there is a section in the manual that explains this. I don't have a reference to it, however a search on E90post would likely turn it up, and I'll leave that for the initiated. However, as I already said, that will not prove it for certain for the M3 anyway. For that exercise, we'd need the similar page from the M3 manual for reference. I don't know if such a page exists for sure. I'll bet it does, but I dont' know. Now, failing the existence of such a page - we can never prove this for certain, I suppose, at least not with currently available resources. Perhaps experimentation would suffice. I don't know, and probably dont' care enough. Personally, I will believe what I stated in my last post to be true until I see otherwise. And will likely cite it as fact, even when I have no proof handy. If called on it, I will point to this thread, and add that everyone is entitled to their own belief system.

Cheers

Thats a good reason to insert the key. I will have to note that for future reference.

Thanks.

You also have to insert the key to turn on the radio with the car off too.

I also remember reading it in the manual. There is a small section dedicated to CA and I believe it indicates it there. The Key is not rechargable.

Well, that clears it up enough for me.
