Left daytime running light message but both lights are out.

Hey guys, I have an '08 e92 M3 and when starting it up the other day I got an error for faulty left side daytime running light. However when inspecting I noticed that the angel eyes on both sides are actually out.

Do you guys have any idea how to troubleshoot this, if it was only one side I'd start by replacing the bulb but since it's both I suppose they would not both go out at the same time?

Best,
Pietu

If the the car detects a problem with one of the daytime running lights, it will discontinue use of both of them. Replace the left bulb and see if they work. I had this a few years ago. If I remember right, the computer might need to be reset by dealer.

Don't know if that is fully true. My 08 had the old bulbs in it and my drivers side eventually died. However, the passenger side one was still working. I was under warranty and took it to the dealership to fix it. They replaced both bulbs with the newer ones... But just because one is out, I don't think both will go out...

If you're out of warranty or have no time to visit dealer, for OEM bulb removal, use the DIY for Angel eyes bulb install:

Frankly, I'm not even sure why dealer will replace a bulb for you in warranty. But I guess it's a customer relations thing...it cost them virturally nothing to provide the replacement for you. A bulb can be considered a wear and tear item.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I decided to check the left side H8 bulb and sure enough it was burnt out. Since it was so easy to check I thought I'd look at the right side that the car didn't report and sure enough the right side was out as well!

I don't think they have ever been changed so I am fine getting a new set but what is the chance that both of them go at the exact same time or is there a possibility that one of them going caused some voltage spike that burned the other one as well?

I'd definitely consider putting aftermarket bulbs to refresh the look if I still lived in the US but I'm currently living in Finland and ordering the same stuff you guys get is a bit more tricky!

I agree, a wear item indeed. But I think the first gen bulbs had an abnormally short life so maybe it was a customers relation thing to replace it. Then again, they also replace the battery in your key thob if it is dying!!

Left went out for me two weeks ago (with right side still functional), put in new bulb, now passenger's side is out.

I didn't get a notice/error for either.

Rather than wast time at dealer, I'll just replace myself. Thanks for the help.
