"DCT is faster but boring after a while. 6mt if you want to feel like your driving a sports car..." Yeah those ecno box Ferrari, Lambo and McClarens aren't sports cars either. Guess only you know what a sports car really is, so I presume you are like 80 years old and only know sports cars from last century!

I was a three-pedal purist (tm) and railed against flappy paddles every chance I got. I've owned a lot of cars with manual transmissions, and I still have an Elise in my garage.
When I decided that I needed an M3, I searched for months for the right car (with a "proper" manual transmission). I was at a karting event with a friend of a friend and we were talking about his e90 M3. He had DCT. I told him I was looking for one myself but I was trying to find a nice example with a 6 spd. manual. He asked if I'd driven a DCT car yet and insisted I try his. Long story short, I bought my e90 (with DCT) a couple weeks later. To me, this transmission suits the character of the high-revving V8 in these cars perfectly. I've had the car for a year and a half now and I still don't regret my choice at all. In the end, the OP needs to drive both and see which he prefers. Honestly, I don't get the rivalry between the two camps. The M3 is a great car with either transmission. Personally, I like the DCT better with this engine. And it's not because I'm lazy, drive in traffic, don't care about being 'connected' to the car or I'm not a big enough enthusiast. I've done a bunch of track time, held a competition license and spend way too much time thinking about cars. For me, the DCT is the right choice for this car. For somebody else, it might be the three-pedal manual. |

Also paddles are not what makes a dct great, just like having the auto transmission shifter on the floor like a manual (they used to be on a stalk around the steering wheel), so comparing a dct with paddles with any automatic with paddles is a poor comparison.

One thing though this has nothing to do with F1 gearboxes except that it has paddles. Well i guess an automatic toyota with paddles is F1 technology then |

I was half joking. Dct is great as a transmission. But to be honest I do enjoy driving manual car. Regardless if exotics use dct. Dct and awd are needed today to get the times they advertise. Which is cool but for a what I personally want manual is more fun. Trying to help the op with a actually driving perspective not to argue which is better.
There isn't a bad choice. But the m3 isn't a exotic so a comparison to Lambo or f car isn't really a comparison to make either. |

The fastest cars are either using a DCT type transmission, or soon will be. I enjoy manual transmissions too, but I also like being faster. More so, actually. BTW, "exotic" is really undefined and meaningless. In other words, it doesn't matter if it's an F car, P car, or BMW car. They're cars with high revving engines that haul ass. |

It wasn't an exotic issue, it was a post that said sports cars only have manual transmissions. This was true years ago, but no today, today only econo boxes have manuals (for the most part).
Here is an F1 description: The gearboxes of modern Formula One cars are now highly automated with drivers selecting gears ‘seamlessly’ via paddles fitted behind the steering wheel. Wonder what that sounds like? A DCT?

To keep this thread going, if you advocate DCT, admit if you can really drive a stick and if you have owned or still own a manual.
Me, yes, plus my 4 speed 65 Corvair Corsa
