I wonder if they thought this was going to be "cheaper and safer than going to the track"...

An E9x M3 is not hard to handle... At all. It's a question of maturity, self control, and common sense. Now experience would have definitely helped me when I totaled my viper. 505whp with no traction control or ABS. That should require driving experience, not an M3.

86mph is "street racing"? Holy cow, there's a "construction zone" on my commute that was apparently built like a 70mph highway. It's ALWAYS a "construction zone" because the ticket prices are doubled if it is consider a construction zone. There is almost NEVER any work going on, but there are almost always people pushing 80-85 on their commute. I mean soccer moms in the Highlander, guy in a beat up old Impala-pretty obviously not "street racers", just people who don't know how to read a speedo.
There seems to be a bit of hyperbole in the story. Is this really worthy of impounding without some other dangerous driving? Is this just a ploy to generate money for a cash strapped community? (I saw the link about 13 cars so far impounded-it appears to be a common tactic in this area?) |

ABSOLUTELY NOT. Civil forfeiture leads to greedy officials taking property to attain assets. It is RIFE with corruption and absolutely violates due-process.
Read up about just some of the abuses before advocating for this. By the way, it has been used in the US. The case linked below has some pretty credible evidence to support that a group of greedy officials intended to seize the property due to its value. http://articles.latimes.com/1993-03-...l-civil-rights |

your logic doesn't make sense. the punishment should fit the crime. Properly trained and audited LE departments should not be corrupt. Assuming all LE is corrupt and will take advantage is a flawed argument. It's like saying b/c we have racist cops arresting minorities, we should stop arresting minorities. It's not a minorities issue, it's a crime issue. Racist cops in this case should be terminated from the department. If local voters feel strongly about this a proper punishment, so be it. Let the citizens decide. |
