I have to give the nod to BMW. That's not to say Honda or GM couldn't/can't make a decent engine, I just think BMW has more experience in high performance road going engines and the probability that I will still be thrilled with the engine at 100K+ miles is greater. Just my perception based on having 3 BMWs with 100K+ miles on them
I wasn't referring to your post either. Actually, I forgot whose post I was referring to. Maybe it's just in the air. Well, it doesn't matter...

Although experience matters, innovation happens, and it can be lead by just about any actor who has the means. Meaning, there is no reason why Japanese engineers can't design road going high performance engines, and they do. S2000, GTR, NSX are just some examples. I owned 2 300ZXs in the 90s, and they were very well designed cars with great engines.

Okay, my CA just got off the phone with BMWNA.

The CPO warranty that we can buy from BMW for a total 6 yr./100k miles ($50 deductible) coverage is $4,875. The also have an independent plan, Primus Care, that has the same coverage, except $100 deductible, that is about $800 less.

Either can be purchased anytime the original warranty is in effect. Only reason to purchase up front is if you want to roll it into your financing, or guard against future price increases. I think the downside to that would be if the car gets stoled or totalled, I doubt insurance covers it.

Is the warranty you are reffering to the additional 2yrs/50k mile warranty you can put on top of the manufacturer warranty?

2yrs for $4,875?

Wow, that's pretty steep at ~$2.5k/year. It might be an OK deal if it covers service as well though. Does it?

Shouldn't. That should be a different plan.

How much is that plan? I'm more interested in that than my engine failing in year 5.

dealerships are usually willing to negotiate a little on these. Perhaps a group buy could stir some interest with them dropping the pricing. I usually do not keep my cars for more than 3 yrs, so it's not for me, but if you are planning on hanging on the car for well past the warranty, then it is a must. Something goes out on any Mcar, expect it to cost a lot more than Japanese auto parts.

Yeah, well, so can a GT3 cup car motor....but you rebuild those after 50 or so hours! Even though the motor can "handle" 9K, it wont last long at it!

I know you're looking for US pricing, but for what its worth here's the Canadian info from my dealer - at least it will give you a ballpark... I got these back in December so need to reconfirm them:

BMW Tire & Rim Warranty - $899 (3 years or 100,000km)
-Road Hazard Warranty (covers damages from broken glass, nails, pot holes, blow outs)
-Covers ANY Tires or Rims installed on the vehicle
-Covers labour, parts, balancing, mounting, installation, taxes.
-Unlimited claims, unlimited number of claims
-Applicable at any BMW Retailer in North America
-Essential for vehicles with Run-Flat tires or Sport packages
-Sign and Drive warranty (you are not left out of pocket waiting for reimbursement)

BMW Service Inclusive - $850 (3 years / 60,000km)
-Add to your ownership experience by taking advantage of BMW Canada’s Service Inclusive.
-Your BMW is already covered with 4 years / 80,000km factory warranty and scheduled maintenance.
-Service Inclusive is an additional protection for wear and tear items, such as clutch components, wiper blades, brake rotors and linings, engine belts.

I'm not a big believer in the extended warranty or extended maintenance plans until you are closer to the term/mileage limit. I'd rather have the money now and worry about it later.

What happens if you sell the car? Sure it can add to resale value but not that much. What happens if you wreck the car?

Extended warranties should be refundable if not used and pro-rated if within the warranty period. I have a friend who had just this happen with a different brand of automobile.
