One thing that does point to the S65 using a break in oil is the importance that BMW (in the UK at least) attach to the 1200 mile service being completed pretty much exactly on time. BMW UK have been known to deny warranty on cars if this service is not done on time.

BMW using 5W-30 for break-in and then switching to 10W-60 seems to explain why many owners complain about ticking sounds that begin right after the 1200 mile service.

Castrol's Professional 5W-30 is now on the recommended list for M cars - time to deprecate 10W-60 for non-tracked S65s?
