How much RPM is over the rev limiter?
So i snaped the bolt and bent subframe the second time. i have a 2011 manual e93 M with 9000 miles on it... BMW warranty doesn't want to fix it. They are going to have some BMW Reps coming in tomorrow to check if i have been "abusing" the car..My questions is what is considered being "Over Rev".. Sometimes when I'm really bored, and the road is empty(which is like 5% of the time) i launch my car @ 3 rpm.. the most i have gone is 4, but nothing ever crazier than that.. is that considered as a OverRev?? i really need to find this out because if it does, they say they could void my warranty.. i still have a chance to pull my car out before these Reps show up.. So please somebody help =(

I think the message hasn't sunk into folks that these cars just cant take that in stock form but everyone wants to believe b/c they are in an M3 that its indestructible or something..there are several threads about how to beef up the rear subframe to diff mount points if you want to launch.
I cant comment on over-reving. |

This 'bolt snapping' is prevalent enough that it seems like a bigger issue than a bunch of people doing launches from 3k rpm. This does not seem to occur as often with any other vehicle with this level of HP or higher (especially FI engines that are modded) and one can't really assert that only M3 drivers do 3k rpm launches. There is a reason why the M3 GTS and the new M5 have differentials that are connected to the subframe w/ solid bushings...it's pretty apparent that it's a design flaw. A car of this caliber should not have this issue. You might want to just see what the guys from BMW have to say, and I would log in a complaint to the NHTSA, since that's the only way that will get BMW's attention and hopefully with enough people complaining, they'll issue a fix.

yeah dude, its crazy that i always have to worry about the bolt snapping back of my head every time i take off... I'm just going to let them do the scan or what ever cuz i know i didn't do anything stupid with the car.. i just hope they don't make launching the car at 3k a big issue because a almost 100G car shouldn't be breaking this easy..

If the rear end is such an issue... Why does BMW offer DCT guys launch controll off 5K rpms then? And if we just floor it from a red light, the rpms jump to 3k and launch us too.
Seems odd that they give us tools to launch our cars if it harms them. If you are going to offer launch control, why not upgrade the parts affected? Is this a manual only issue? I've never once used launch control, but I've accidentally dropped my clutch at 3k roasting my tires up in smoke. Hah. I did that like the first week of owning my cat not knowing DCT dropped the clutch form a dead stop with a quick pedal mashing. Haha... My 11yr old son really dug that. |

What you are doing is called launching the car, not over-revving it. An over-rev is when the tach needle goes past the red (~8500+).
Regardless of that, if you tell BMW that you launch the car like that, they will most likely deny you. They shouldn't, but they will.

I consider launching the car abuse. I think BMW has a thorough understanding of how the car reacts and breaks.
I think you said this is the 2nd time? Do you think maybe the driver needs to be fixed? Just sayin'

While the DCT has launch control, I am willing to bet it will self-limit the frequency that you can launch the car to prevent damage. I think that you may have found that point on your own with the manual......

Other RWD cars in the same class as the M3 seem to be immune from these rear end issues...for whatever reasons BMWs has opted to not stiffen the rear on the M3s as it should have, probably in an effrot to keep NVH low..Im not saying a burnout here and there is going to do immediate damage...but a stock suspension...over time ...yes I think you can expect some rear subframe and diff issues..its disappointing... but it is what it is. |
