I have a very hard time knowing which words are masculine/feminine/neuter. I asked her if there were any tricks but I don't think she understood me, she doesn't speak English very well. I know in romance languages o is masuline, a is feminine and there were some other rules as well and no neutral words so it was much easier.

Or as in French, most nouns ending with an "e" are feminine. The neuter in German really complicates things. As far as I remember, there are no general logical rules indicating gender in German. And then add the tenses for sentences, you have a recipe for confusion.

italian was very complicated but at least it had strict rules, i picked it up pretty quickly.

feminine la (la casa)
masculine il (il formaggio)
vowel l' (l'universitat)
masculine beginning with s + consonant or beginning with z (lo spazio, lo zero)
plural feminine le and change last letter to e (le case)
plural masculine i and change last letter to i (i formaggi)

lol on and on there is a lot more

Parli bene l'italiano! Gets a little more complicated with the oddball words: le dita (the fingers)...or gli zii (the uncles)..gender is very hard to keep track of in Italian, especially when you speak another Romance language like Spanish or Portuguese (my three majors)....
