I think it is a noticeable difference. It is quite a bit shorter than the original 'goose neck' (see photo comparison) and most important it is weighted. As a result, the shifts feel less rubbery and more direct.

you have to change the bag and everything or can you change just the knob?

you can change just the knob itself but you will have to cut the leather. That is what I did and wrapped the existing or even the new one with zip lock and/or velcro so the fit looks OEMish. The shorter/lower knob does make the shifter feel more solid and less rubbery.

It's a great mod and I think it's a no brainer. The shift knob for e36, e46 and e92 are almost identical (plus minus illumunation).

Nice write up and looking good there mate.

If I were you, when you're wanting to return it back to stock, I'd just post it up as a WTT for the OEM setup + some cash on top. Done and done.

When did you get notification of that? I placed an order this morning, and didn't receive anything that indicates it is back-ordered....?

It really looks great!

This is one thing I am going to do when winter is over... Always considered the stock shifter kind of, I don't know, dull. Thanks for great write up!

And oh: Is this the part number: 25-11-2-284-205?

Yep, same here, order has shipped. No waiting. This worth especially since I have an extra plastic ring from my other M3 to use. I won't have to butcher the original knob for the plastic clickon ring.
