I would always go through insurance. Had a Jamaican in an old Isuzu Suv with brush gaurds hit my previous old camry from behind, did some considerable damage to bumper/trunk/lights. I had just took it off full coverage. A police drove just to ask if anyone was hurt; we weren't so he took off. It turns the Jamaican didn't have insurance. And he begged and pleaded to me to let him pay for damages. Long story short, the mofo didn't and I got screwed. Now, I have the best insurance with the lowest deductible and I use it every chance I get'

Don't waste your time let you INS handle it! Your deduct will be reimbursed when they sue his INS. No headaches less waste of time on your part!

Just one more reason front license plates suck. Sorry about your car. Good luck with the repair.

If all goes well you will have your deductible returned to you. While I would take most of this poster's advice, don't expect to see your deductible returned. In a minor accident if the other party does not take responsibility your insurance company may choose not to pursue the matter. Ask me how I know.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the cops will respond to a minor accident in Cali for purposes of getting a police report anymore, for obvious reasons.

Any CA guys had a recent experience with trying to get a police report in cases like this?

Let the insurance handle it. It's not worth the hassle, and the guy probably doesn't have $2k laying around to hand you a check for the damages. Carfax report or not, it's worth the peace of mind to just have the insurance handle it.

Got quoted 1278.xx from a very reputable shop.

Guy said he wants to talk to insurance company now to discuss his policy. I guess i might end up going through insurance after all...

Just go through his insurance, and once fixed, file a diminished value claim (depending on the rules of your State) with his insurance because it will be on Carfax and will impact your ability to sell in the future.

If you're a first time customer at the shop, they might give you some money back too.

We usually do this, help people save on their deductible etc..

Same kinda thing almost happened to me the other day-only on front bumper. Was pulling into a friends apartment complex. The turn to cross over traffic is on an incline and I was behind a truck and he just starts rolling backwards.... Blasted my horn and he did nothing so I threw it in reverse and floored it. Luckily he finally got the message after honking A LOT. Stupid, STUPID people out there.

Good luck on the repairs!

I wouldn't worry about carfax. By the way, my accident was way more expensive (but still cosmetic), and didn't show up on Carfax or any other such site. But even if it does, a rear bumper shouldn't diminish your value at all IMO; just get good pictures and save them. And get it fixed right, which is a new bumper and paint job. Should be like a grand total.

Don't do the mistake of not calling the cops and let the guy supposedly pay you cash. It happened to me once, and got screwed. And ended up having to claim it on my collision, with my deductible, and against my record, instead of on the other guy's insurance, with no deductible. Live and learn.

What would you guys do???
Fifth, sorry to hear about your ordeal bro, and glad you are ok. I would pick it up and send it to the insurance company; that way they have a record of it. Trust me, I used to be an insurance agent. People will move from one insurance company to the next, and they either 1)misplaced the report or 2) never bothered to file it. Bad news: rates will jump dramatically if you can't prove that it is not your fault!.
Good luck bro. take care.

In the US, the police has to fill it out. Well, even between states things are differently.

Get your auto insurance company involved; there could be further complications and problems due to the accident and you need them to be in the know in case that happens if you want any help from them.

OP...good on you. Looks like very minor damage and $1.2K sound about right. Some advice on this thread is exactly why all of our insurance rates are higher than they should be to start with. When people claim back pain and other crap....it all comes back to us with slight increases in rates across the board. Keep it real and always keep your integrity in check. BTW…it is just a car….a nice car but just a car.
