If you want noise, I guess you can replace the intake, else it flows just fine right out of the box.

take it from a guy who extensively researched this, just get a performance filter. K&N or AA. You'll get a little nicer noise & they're not paper so they flow better than OEM. Don't waste your money on a full intake, the stock one is more than capable. You only need a drop in filter.

There's a lot of debate & the makers will promote ~10hp gains, but the 3 independent experts i've talked to say its a total waste and the gains are only cuz of a filter, not the intake system. consider this: all the M3 race cars use the stock intake, they just swap the filter. if its good enough for them, it's good enough for you/me

Keep in mind, the non-paper filters don't 'filter' nearly as well and for race cars, where their engine life is measured in hours, not miles, it may be ok to allow extra silica into the engine, but for a street engine, probably not worth the extra sound or 2hp at WOT.

He has a 2013 without the charcoal filter like the earlier M3s, wouldnt full intakes with a larger elbow be better to see and feel some gains on later models?

I just installed the MS intake. Not sure it's giving me any extra hp's, but I love the sound it makes at WOT! That's worth it for me.

I bought the aFe Stage 2 Pro and have been extremely happy with it. I love the sound it makes and realize now, that's pretty much what I paid for. (which I'm OK with)

Actually no, I've heard the opposite. You'll get more benefit from swapping the older 07/08 M3s than post MY09. There was apparently a small tweak & the switch to paper @ that point.

I changed it back to stock and kept the filter and front scoops. F- Would not buy again. Also, I suspect that the OEM plastic has better heat insulation properties.

that's what I'm thinking too, but I do know for sure that there will be an improvement in air flow & sound @ least. prob not power, but you're never going to get much there

You're right, the foam/gauze filters are just noise and extra dirt. People seem to like them though.

idk about the extra dirt, but I love it. makes this great gargly sound @ 3krpm, totally addicting. My paper one was dirty anyway and the aftermarkets are cheaper than what the stealership charges, so its a no brainer IMHO

I've had all three (MS Stg 2, Dinan, BMC drop in), I'd get MS stg2 if u have limited ///M funds, Dinan if u can pony up the money. I've never had fitment issue with MS intake.

It also might be poor quality control. Are there actually different part numbers for air boxes throughout the years?
