The S5, really? Drives like a bathtub compared to the m3. Pretty car, nice engine...not on the same level. Rs5 is more money and I haven't seen any great press about it, seems most still favor the m3. For that money, I would be looking at used Porsches or a gtr.

That's what the appeal is for many. You won't be seeing many, if any, v8s like this again.

Thats not true according to various statements from BMW. I would expect similar or slightly less weight the next m3 based on what I've read.

4) Supercharging is expensive and changes the core DNA of the M3 requiring numerous supplementary upgrades to maintain balance.
Yah I'm not interested either. If I want a forced induction car, I would have bought one.

The m3 is the most nimble car you will find with the amenities and it has, but if nimbleness is your top priority, above all others, then you are looking at the wrong car IMHO. Unless you want to pull some parts of the car to make it lighter.

Haven't driven the 1m, or been to the future, so hard to help you there ; )

Single, I really don't see the M3 losing any weight for the next generation. With all the tech toys that will be offered(Camera's, Blind Spot detection, Heated Steering wheel, A robotic arm that'll wash your a** when you go to the bathroom... it's going to be 4000+ pounds. In my eyes, BMW has been cutting corners recently, and they're still charging people for it. Quality has dropped significantly. Did they really think it was going to go unnoticed?

You're right. They are lying to everyone about a focus on weight savings for the next m3. All options will now be mandatory and heavier. The CRT, with examples of how to achieve weight savings, does not exist. Record sales clearly indicate people are on to their shoddy cost cutting.

Exactly why they won't do anything about it. People care about the badge. The interior could be made of plastic and nobody would care...as long as the badge is on the car. The cheap(er) quality also helps profits.

OK... so I come back to this... if you feel this way (and it is fine that you do), then why in the hell are you considering a BMW? It makes zero sense given your comments. I hate brocolli but god damn it, I'm gonna get me some brocolli. Why wouldnt you buy a car that you won't then spend the next three years complaining about quality, weight, softness, etc. Well, unless you are one of the people you say only care about the badge.

I agree hasan its funny how half of these guys crack on the 1m and have never driven it and ill respectfully say ive never driven an m3 but if the 1m is this great because of the m3 im sure its a fucking awesome car, but engine wise i know all you guys love the high revving Racing engine but whose to say the new turboed m3 wont rev to 7500 or 8000 if it does that along with the low end torque would beat and na v8 m3 the new. M5 will not break hopes and niether will the m3 but just because theres a new devision of m doesn mean you need to explode on it just wait and see a turbo kit on an m1 and ill say it will comepete with some pretty powerful supercharged m3s especially on the track

To me, the 1M represents a lean and quick thrill ride that is infinitely tweak able, and a blast to drive... perhaps more so than the present and even future M3.

Can you answer the following..? Why ... from your stable... would you dump the M3?

2011 M3 E90 DCT ZCP
2010 335i Sedan
2005 M3 Convertible
2003 325i Sedan

It seems to me the CLEAR choice is the 2010 335i sedan. It's the same car as your M3... but less. Same 4 doors, with a lot less letters... no LSD... no DCT.. no EDC... and no V8! The only positive is better fuel mileage. It seems to me you would keep the M3... it is a legendary car with a unique motor with an incredibly wonderful sound and amazing revving.. It almost sounds as good as an E30 M3 with a CF airbox! Ok.. damnit.. maybe it does sound better..

At any rate.. If this is a his/her thing.. and the 335 is her car... and the M3 is yours... well I guess it may be tough to convince a spouse to dump her car for you to get another new car (hehehe.. especially since you just got a 2011 M3...)

Which one of us wouldn't like a DUAL M car garage? E9x M3 for daily driving and the more nimble. 1M for those days when you head to the track...?

as far as the numbered items above..

1) go drive a 135.. it's 85% of the 1M

2) who cares about representing the past... or the future... or whatever...
it should be about what thrills you.. The S14 in an E30 M3 is so "past"... that in 2 years it will be " hip" again... like bell bottoms, and big framed glasses.. but I've love S14s for the past 15 years.. not because of what it represents, but for the way it works and sounds..

3) the future M3s will actually get lighter... Efficient dynamics.... but they will still be technologically advanced, I am sure.

4) yawn...

At any rate... the fact that you own a 2011 M3... and already seem to regret your decision... already is the answer... you aren't absolutely THRILLED with the M3..... if it's not about money/power/M3 name.. etc... then you've already answered your own question.

Lightbulb

Keep the e90 M3 and get the 1M , get rid of the 335, no purpose in your garage if you already have the M3 unless it's her car, if so , tell her it's all about cutbacks for whats coming .

You might regret getting rid of the M3 and also letting the rare 1M go as well, do it while you still can

I'd like to clarify that I presently do not have a stable of BMWs in my garage. I've revised my signature to reflect that my M3 is presently my only car and DD. (My wife drives a smooth Merc E350)

Having said that, I've always felt a slight trade off occurred when I traded my chipped 335i for my M3. Yes, the M3 is superior in almost every way, but it really feels FAT as I rev my way from gas station to gas station (though mileage is not a big factor for me.)

Fact is, I need a DD and I can only afford one toy at a time. The Cayman S, though tempting, is not in the least bit practical. The C63 is fat. I don't want anything to do with Audi's quattro drive.

BMW is the only game in town that does such a great job at designing very useable performance cars. I wish I could own them all!

If you don't need rear seats, the Cayman S is fairly practical. I DD my Cayman S, just got it 3 weeks ago, traded in an '08 335i. Between the two trunks, there's a surprising amount of storage space. The PDK transmission is amazing, the ride with PASM is more comfortable than my 335i was and the handling is amazing. I too prefer a NA car, the M3 was the only other car I seriously considered. I may have considered the 1 M if it was offered with DCT and it wasn't such a pain to get one.

Overall package is still one of the best. I never said I hate the M3. I nitpick. I'm sure BMW reads these forums and if I constantly whine, maybe someone over at BMW will read it and be like, "you know what, he's right. Our customers demand more then what we're offering."

Sidenote: I loved your broccoli example.

Kirk,

It sounds like your heart really wants the 1M.

Now, this 1 M that you're talking about, is it new, used? Is it a color you love? etc.

It would be a special order newbie. Maybe white; maybe black. Haven't decided yet overall. Not sure if the backseat is adequate for my needs. I'm really torn.
