PLus... The only people drooling over it were kids. All the old guys (seasoned racers and veterans I respect) thought my ride was the biz-ness and none of them even seemed to notice the GTR.

Those "seasoned" racers apparently aren't aware of the GT-R's blistering times at the Nurburgring.

Don't get me wrong, I respect the technology and the power in the car... It's just that Japanese tuner feeling in the cars. I'm just tired of it.

Truth be told, I came from a 2004 STi. I had one of the first ones in the country back in May/June of 2003. I loved that car and it was very tuned from the factory. So tuned in fact that it ran great on the street, but go do 30+ track days in it some of those days in 100 degree heat and I had head gasket failures, turbo failures., You name it, it broke.

That burned me. When it broke this past Feb at VIR, I sold it right after that and ordered the E92

And if I was a betting man, I'd say that these will follow a similar fate. If they actually hold together after repeated abuse I'd be surprised. On the other hand, I know the M cars are ready for the abuse.

Tell us more about your job at CNET!

Also, I find it hilarious that the speedometer reads as it does. If the needle gets to see greater than one quarter of its surrounding circle (on public roads)... you are breaking the law!

In for your job description,
-Chris

You are comparing a Subaru with a Nissan? Skylines have earned more respect than most M cars in my book. Personally I think BMW messed up with the new M3, it sounds like a kitten and you can get more power out of a 335i with a few simple mods.

Well yes I am.

Turbo... check
AWD... check
made in Japan... check
respect in Japan and across the world... yes for both
win and set records in race series... yes for STI (WRC), yes for skyline (JTCC and Time Attack in Japan), M3 well Its the most winning touring car, ever.

Obviously the GTR would kill an STi AND an M3. Im not saying Im better or faster. I've just had a bad experience with the tuner car thing.

And to your point about a 335i being faster with mods... yes it can. I am just tired of modifying. The 335 will have issues, I know alot of guys with 335's that track them and they are already running into overheating issues and failed wastegates. If you push it farther than it was designed the weakest link will show up. Then you upgrade that and the next weakest link breaks. So on and so on.

Not me anymore

ALL cars break if you track them long enough. Yes, your M3 will break too. Its just a matter of time. Its why all professional racing teams have an entire engineering crew to fix cars all day long. In fact, a lot of race cars will break after every single race. A car designed with speed in mind will get you that extra tenth at the cost of overheating, cracked head gasket, you name it.

With that said, I think youre just fed up with modifications. I agree, I am too. You just cant beat factory R&D and if you want more speed, then get a car with that designed into it.

Ahem...like the GTR. I cant speak on the reliability, but the numbers are impressive. And for 70k? Bargain. To be honest, if you wanted a pure track car, the M3 wont be as suited as a GTR or Z06. "Cheap" interior tells you thats where the focus of the engineering went. Not that the M3 has a great interior either.... and comparatively speaking, you do get more kit with the onboard electronics in a GTR.

Sure, but a 335 modded will not last as long as the stock M car will.

By that logic, yes the M would break well before the GTR when modded to be equal to the GTR in power/speed.

Agree 100% the GTR is a bargain based on its performance. Agree that a Z06 would be a better track car. but I had some other requirements besides the track relaibility. Back seat being one.

cnet has been reviewing cars (car technology, to be exact) for a while, actually. i posted a few other pics here before when the 1 series and M3 and R8 came in for review.

we've had some really cool stuff in, including an M5, an M6 or even a Rolls Royce.

check it all out here, if you're interested.

the seat really wasn't that far back. it was just comfortable. it is really impossible sit in the back unless the driver/passenger are pushed to the front.

plus, i'm 5'9" and i had to tilt my head to the side because there was no way i could sit up straight - i was hitting the back window with my head.
