Checking in

Just signed up for the forum and wanted to say Hi!

Not new to the M family. Currently running an E90 M3 having previous owned two E39 M5's. Was happily contributing to the UK M3 community on the M3 Cutters forum until it became obvious that the moderators were trained in N Korea!

I'm out of Fife Scotland but spend a lot of time in the USA on business and have a lot of good friends that side of the pond.

Looking forward to learning and hopefully contributing along the way

Wee picture of the current fleet...

Welcome! Beautiful rides.

What do you miss (and not miss) about the E39 M5, compared with your E90 M3?

Nice! I'm sure there are some great roads in Scotland to enjoy them both.

Wow, that's a tough one! The E39 is truly an epic car and is still a benchmark today, 13 years after its launch. Designed in a different era when engineers wrote the checks not accountants.

The E90 M3 is it's natural successor IMHO (not the E60 M5). So close in terms of concept and delivery.

I miss the low down torque but the E90's top end offsets that. I miss the bullet proof build quality (my last one was 10 years old and didn't have a single squeak or rattle), and the E39 felt much bigger inside.

Don't miss the poor rust proofing (many UK cars suffer badly from corrosion) or the parts prices (which are high even vs. the E90).

However, the decision to move to the E90 was predominantly down to the DCT box. Absolutely LOVE it, and hooked up to the S65 all other bets are off

Would like to put another E39 in the garage at some point. Money, space and time being the only roadblocks

I've only owned cars with manual transmissions and enjoy driving a traditional manual so much that I'm not sure I could ever give that up (until I have to), but the raves about the DCT really are making me feel that I should at least drive one at some point to know how the two compare...

I drove one the other day and it clicked. Now I see why the 6 speed is considered crappy in the m5. Same idea, this car as designed for DCT IMO. the shorter gears and ability to really just flick it into first gear is a huge plus as the car is always in its powerband. It really did feel amazing, but would the novelty wear off? I dunno

Congrats and welcome, I tried the DCT before ordering but still stuck with the 6MT. Maybe one day who knows!

You should ... drive one that is ... my last 3 m3's all had MT ... now that I have the DCT ... how shall I put it I simply it ... the chance to switch from one to the other is so great based on traffic conditions ... as of late I am enjoying the Paddles and love the exhaust tone by open window ... making full use of up and down shifting like I did with my MT cars.

Welcome.

Interesting to hear of Fife. Both my parents are from there - Blairhall and Kirkcaldy respectively.
