I had a defective oil cap before. Dealer replaced it and cleaned the engine bay(although I wasn't 100% satisfied with their cleaning job). Never happen after the cap replacement.

Im willing to bet the service guy cranked the engine over with the cap off while checking that he filled the oil to the correct level.

I had an oil leak, and this wasn't after an oil change or anything.

It was a gasket.

The design of the gasket and how it fits into the cap is interesting. If you take the gasket out you will note that it is a little bigger than recessed area in the cap into which it fits. The best way to ensure you stay leak free is to press the outer edge of the gasket into the cap all the way around. This will leave the inner edge not well seated. However, when you tighten the cap back onto the valve cover, the inner edge will seat. Then you should take the cap off again to verify that the gasket is where it should (fully seated into the recessed area of the cap). Then put it back on carefully (so that that you don't unseat the gasket) and you are good to go. Yah, so it is a crappy design - but between adding oil and doing my own oil changes I've never had a problem. You just need to understand the limits of what you're working with.

Does the new oil cap (2011+ model I believe) have only 90 degree turn?
I realized it only takes 1/4 of a turn (90 degrees) to fully secure in place.
Did I do it wrong? the cap is tight and secure that way.

You did it right. BMW did not but then again we have 3 cars and none them have an old time conventional screw down cap. They all have a variation on this design.

Sorry to hear OP but I'm glad I came across this thread in time.

Scheduled an appointment for my first 1200 miles break-in service for tomorrow and after reading these kind of horror stories makes me nervous! If the oil cap is the cause, then that's unacceptable for a quality made car by BMW. If its a technician issue then that's kinda expected since human are error free anyways. You just can't put your trust just because they are the dealership!

Like many of you, I like to watch my car being serviced and once done I do a thorough walk around of the car until I'm satisfied. I have seen my hood not close completely and my oil cap not installed!!

It is only the oil cap and the service. The parts on the car that matter the most are a work of art.
