How to fix minor scratch on rear bumper?

Fella's,

Anyone know how I can DIY fix at home scratch fix? This was done, by my carelessnes, as I was taking out a tool box and hit the bumper. It's not deep as you can see but it did smoosh the plastic and scratch the paint.

I don't think just touching it up with car touch-up paint will do the job. It would have to be smoothed, sanded, etc.

Any idea's would be great. Thanks,

Rob

With what sand paper should I sand the area? The scratch is just slightly deeper than the finish. It gouged the plastic a little. Also how should I polish it? With my buffer or what? Thanks,

Since it's down to the plastic, it will be hard to fix without some bodywork products. You'll want to wet sand with 2000 and see if you can get it flat enough to add a bit of filler. Sand that and then paint over.

Cool, sounds like I'm going to have to get more info or find a DIY video before I attempt it. Thanks,

RB

This is going to be a lot of work to DIY and have it be 100% again. A decent size area will need to be sanded (AT LEAST a 6" radius around it), the gouge filled, primered, base coat, and cleared. As each layer goes on, the area to be covered gets larger.

You can buy canned versions of all of the products you will need (primer, base, and clear) but they are expensive ($20-30 per can) and are not as good as their catalyzed counterparts with regards to resilience. You will need sanding block(s) and various high quality wet sand papers. You will also need a filler suitable for use on plastics. A can of silicone remover isn't a bad idea either. The cost is really going to add up. And the result may be that there is more or less metal flake, the flake is a different size, and/or the color is off and the repair is noticeable.

I've done quite a bit of at home DIY 2-stage paint work and it is labor intensive and expensive (lips and diffusers and such). I've had some experience fixing defects in my paint work as well as OEM jobs also. IMO, pay a pro $100 more than you'll spend gathering the supplies and save yourself the trouble. Your other option would be to touch it up and live with it (this is what I would do).

^ solid advice.

If you're OCD about it being perfect, it's best to pay a pro to do everything for you. Work like this is pretty intensive.

If not, touching it up will probably do the trick.

Damn, this sounds like a real pain in the ass. Ok, will have to find a good body shop then.

Thanks all,

I have a few of those on my bumper, just gonna wait until the rear bumper gets "unsightly" before I have it resprayed. You will get more, just a matter of time. I hardly notice them anymore... maybe i'm becoming less OCD.

Hey Op...I used to live in ABQ and know of a fabulous body shop that specializes in BMW's. They have done body work on 4 of my cars. PM me if you want their contact number.
