PROGMAN

Anyone know what progman version we are on and the changes included in each version.
This was a rapidly evolving software program for the first 18 months of the 6 series and contolled everything from stereo settings, i-drive interface to automatic shift points.

Good question, and more generally, is there a reliable source of BMW TSBs anywhere on the internet at this point? The ones I used to know of in my E46 days have all dried up.

I guess TIS is the way to go. $2500 a year, though? Ugh. Guess I'll periodically blow the $30 for 24 hours of access.

Best analogy is to think of it as the car's operating system. Controls pretty much every aspect of the car that's electronically managed.

Is the engine management software integrated with the entertainment/nav/climate control software (iDrive) or is there an interface?

By engine management I mean the engine, suspension dynamics, brakes, etc... I'm assuming that all this is integrated in one real time program running in the cars CPU.

Engine management is on a completely separate system as the other stuff. It pretty much has to be isolated for safety.

What I'd like to know is how similar is the software in the M3, or three series for that matter, to the 5, 6 and 7 series. I was thinking that Night Vision would be nice but BMW does not offer it for the 3 series. So I was wondering though if the iDrive might already be programmed to accept input from the Night Vision control module. Could I just buy the parts, plug them in, and then use it with the iDrive that would control zoom, etc.?

Think of it as the cars BIOS.

It takes specialised equipment and apprently several hours to update a car, overtime the initial bugs will be ironed out and then updated. If someone posts a list of changes this then gives you the leverage when the car is in to get the progman updated under warranty, the dealer won't do it unless there is an issue with the car.
