2nd cats or Resonators, which is louder?

when deleted which gives more volume? i know deleting the resonators gives a raspy tone which most hate. ( I like aggressive though). and 2nd cat delete gives deeper sound, which more like. (also a great sound)

I have OEM (2 pipe )mod, and looking for louder sound. So with that said, i am not looking for advise on which sounds better! .whats going to unlock more volume. not looking to delete both btw. one or the other.

thanks for any help.

not looking to touch primary cats also.

I had the oem mod (2 perf pipes) and deleted the 2nd cats. It was noticeably louder and also a lot more raspy. I eventually replaced the straight pipe with a second set of resonators to cut down on the rasp.

Never touched the original resonators so I cant tell you how much, if any louder that would have been as opposed to the 2nd cats. Maybe just start by removing the secondary cats and if that still isnt loud/raspy enough for you then go ahead and take out the resonators too.

If you are looking for more volume, why not do an ACM mod? If it were me, I'd delete the secondary cats. Might as well free up a few hp's. I don't think it's a good idea to run with 0 resonators, but that's just me.

There is very little support for BMW shops where i live. I wanted to do a OEM mod. the european car shop i went to was recommended by another member who did the 2 pipe method. which is why i also wanted to do what the shop already did. muffler delete still would not have been loud enough. i need full exhaust to truly be happy. but at 4k miles, not ready to give BMW a reason to void any warrnety. messing with cats is always getting into grey areas.

in the pass i have always did full exhaust, and always did away with resonators, but went with high flow cats.i wanted to keep this car little more DD friendly for the time being though.

i might gut the 2nd cats.

Delete the resonator. Deleting the cats is stupid u gain whp and lose restriction. Just take off the resonators, whp won't change. Way better

Deleted secondary cats, resonators and replaced 2 pipes in OEM exhaust. Mega raspy loud. Probably don't want to go that far... thus I replaced the backbox now to a supersprint. Hint of rasp but much better now. Still running with my chopped up OEM x-pipe without the cats/resonators.

that setup with the straight piped OEM x and OEM muffler mod is perfect for what i want. I came from loud muscle cars, in fact my last muscle car was much louder. being i had long tube headers, cam, no mufflers or resonators. but it over the top for daily driving, which is what i wanted from the m3.

I know theres a lot of sound locked in the X pipe, just wanted to know which is restricting more.

If you're sure that's what you want? For me it was a bit too much. Fun though!
Full of character but very thin and raspy sounding though. Extreme ear piercing sound.

1) Great sound

2) Those downshifts must have been perfected through numerous practice.

Zero drone. Honestly. I'm obsessed with sounds. And no check engine light cause the sensors are on the mains cats so the car hasn't got a clue what I'm doing after that.

1) thanks again - super cheap mod as well. £200 / $300~ fit and mod for muffler and x-pipe
2) Manual all the way - so much fun doing it myself.
