He said he tracks "maybe twice a year". Might just be worthwhile to buy a set of pads for the track and quickly swap them when you arrive. OEM pads are sufficient for the street.

Something like the DS2500 might suffice for the occasional track excursion without sacrificing driveability on the street.

ds2500 would work fairly well but they make a lot of noise on the street.

I think I might just go with the BMW Performance pads. Shouldn't be noisy and better than the OEM pads for what I'll be doing. But with luck, winning the lottery, I'll put that new APracing BBk on. lol!

Who is making the BMW Performance pads? I wonder if it's just a rebranded Pagid Blue or something.

I'm not sure either but I think someone replied on the last page and mentioned they are Pagid also. Got to search. Hopefully my local BMW dealer has them in stock.

I'm in the same boat, I don't want to swap (mostly cuz im lazy & not that mechanically inclined) for the 2-3 track days I'll do/year. But I think the OEM suck on the track, I had to cut the day short because they basically stopped working. I think it was a combination of heat and material build up on the rotors, idk.

Anyway, I'd like a pad that will survive a track day. less dust would be nice, but I'd prioritize good cold bite & no noise for a performance street pad. Is there really no good compromise? I was 80% convinced on the stoptech pads, but apparently they're no good?

FYI I have heard from many people on the boards here and experts @ shops & people at the track that the hawk's suck ass. Definitely NOT the way to go. I've heard universally good things about pagids, but its a track pad and they're $$$.
I'm not sure yet what I'll do. For right now I'm actually not too worried about track use there is only one shitty track 3 hours away and I rarely go there, especially in winter. Mainly I was thinking of getting something a bit higher-performance than OEM since I might have my OEM brakes back on for a long while. But I'm probably NOT going to go with the Hawks from what I'm reading here so far.

They are great for aggressive street driving but I and others have experienced their lack of performance on the track. I've experienced where basically they didn't grip any harder than the initial bite when cold then faded on the track to where I felt they could not grip any harder no matter how hard I'm braking, so good amount of fade compared to my AP, night and day pretty much.

Yeah that is an option I'm think of doing too. More lazy to go that route although I'm a mechanic and find it easy to do. Might consider it but for where I live and probably won't track but once this year, not sure if its worth it. I'm not trying to hold a record on that track once a year so not pushing hard isn't going to ruin my day...although going off the track will. lol!

Put it this way, I just want pads that won't fade or wear in four or five aggressive driving days up/down mountain switch backs, especially on the way back down. I would equate that to a light track day to some extent.

OEM might be good enough for you then, depending on how long you're driving. I agree, you don't want them fading on the way down! if they wear out and you don't want to pay M tax on another set, maybe get a street performance set, like the stoptechs street performances. They're designed for aggressive street driving so should suit your needs perfectly.

I might just get a set of track pads too and force myself to learn how to swap them. Apparently its pretty easy. OEM pads are great on the street (except for the ridiculous amounts of dust!), a little more stopping power would be nice but I've never gotten into an accident because my brakes weren't good enough!

Just stick with oem. I've put down some fairly legitimate lap times with stock but it does depend on what kind of track. Small tight track you'll see then fade quickly, bigger tracks with more cooling (straights) you can get by on. But guessing if you only go twice a year you're more of a begginer?

As much as I hate to admit, yes and now. I'm aggressive on the track, did several weekend track days in Europe, feel comfortable pushing my M3 on the track. But because of location now in Albuquerque, I sure have very little choices and the only track worth going to is three hours away so with other things going on in life, I've only been out there once so far in the last year. But I've tracked at Silverstone, Snetterton and Brands Hatch in the UK. I think I've got about 8 or 9 weekends all together, did 6 weekends at Nurburgring too. Actually Snetterton is where I felt a good amount of fade while braking and Nurburgring after each day of 4 or 5 or so runs, I'd get that giddy vibration while street driving for a few hundred Km due to pad transfer with the OEM. So definitely depends on the track how the brakes act. But I'm no pro, wish I was some where I could get more experience under my belt.

So I'm sure I'll be ok with OEM pads but I can push my car hard enough on mountain roads where I take good advantage of my AP BBK, But for a while like I mentioned, I'll be back to OEM. But I might just go with the BMW Performance pads which are Pagid I guess.

OEM are useless at the track, no matter the skill level IMO. They'll be good for a grand total of 5 laps where you can get a pretty good time, sure. But THEN they'll be heat soaked and you'll have to spend laps cooling or hit the pits. Then they'll be good for another 2-3 laps until you have lots of fun with juddering brakes and lower performance. Does not make for a very confident driver! I had to slow down & then cut the day short because I didn't think the car could sto
This was on a moderately brake heavy track with one big straight and one smaller straight. There was only 3 or 4 heavy braking zones, the rest was momentum based. I was pretty disappointed with the OEM pads on track.

Im starting to think some pagid yellows are the way to go. Even if you only track a few times a year, they'll last many seasons. Apparently you can even run them on the street and the noise isn't bad at all.

^ I'll throw in a cool down lap in between then next couple laps are not as bad. I have a bbk on the way but I've been going to the track every other week lately. Not twice a year as he had mentioned. For twice a year didn't seem worth it is what I was saying. You can just throw in a cool down lap here and there

Agreed! The Deming track in south New Mexico is ok, dusty but ok. The Napa speed way in Albuquerque is complete crap. Chews a set of tires in one day and its made for little Miata's. Guess I'll have to enjoy mountain runs in the summer.
