Because sitting on top of a tall metal object doesn't totally silhouette your ass to anyone looking in your general direction. He could be seen by any enemy sniper who could pick his ass off if that was really his position. hope you aren't in the military. never played either of those actually, too old for games. But some things do translate to the real world.

At 3/4 of a mile against a force of that nature, there's nothing they could do even if they did spot you (which they wouldn't). They have trouble hitting people at a few yards away with the AK; no way in hell are they going to be able to do anything about a sniper 3/4 of a mile away. Against a force as well geared and trained as ours, maybe I'd worry. Otherwise, the sniper might as well be Allah himself to those guys. |

I'm not, but if I was I wouldn't want you covering my ass that's for damn sure. These guys are 1200+ yards out. The best that the enemy would be able to tell is the shot came from "that way". And even if they did spot the sniper (which they probobly wouldn't) what are they going to do, shoot at him with their AK's? And if we are talking a 1-on-1 situation, if the sniper did his job correctly the target would have been dropped before he even heard the shot. |

That would be good reasoning if the guys with the AKs were a threat, but the threat is of another sniper, who also is not going to be on top of the action either, and would be able to spot him very quickly if one was in the neighborhood.

If he was a sniper he'd be high and far away as well. If it wasn't he'd be dead. I really don't even know why I'm wasteing my time with this, but IF you had watched the program you'd know that these guys were sitting on top of this building for several days straight 24hours a day... they knew exactly what was going on and exactly what the enemy threats were. |

When you hear about our guys getting "sniped" in Iraq, it's rarely from >200m. Trust me. The biggest danger to that team were any locals they had befriended while casing the area, and after we lost that Marine team, it wasn't about to happen again. |

He and his spotter did just fine. Better, even. None of the enemy could even see him at greater than 300 meters, I can promise you that. Not to mention, when your friends are taking fire, the concern for your own safety is nil. That's why he deserved the bronze star(V).
Anyone who's had to make a shot without optics at greater than 300m knows what I'm talking about. Those trying to critique should pick up a weapon, go to the range without a scope and see what I mean. Even an enemy with rudimentary optics wouldn't have had a chance. And try to stay prone and attentive for 12 hours after humping all the gear to your spot, then hauling it up a tower. A box of .50 cal ammo isn't light. Taking this all into consideration, these were amazing shots. Also, keep in mind that this is the unclassified version of what went down.

I'm still amazed at the shot he made with the M2. Well, two shots really.

So you know that we have technology that surpasses the equipment in Iraq by well allot, right? And that snipers have spotters looking for enemies and UAV's flying above to detect enemy movement. God, don't you watch the military channel.

I'm still amazed at his ingenuity to snipe with such a weapon. Brilliant - and incredibly gifted - man for sure. It's too bad more people don't know about his amtrack heroics later on in his career though.
Guy was an ice-cold bad-ass motherfucker. |
