So, in this case, no, you are not free to think what BMW's intentions are with pre-production test mules. The fact of the matter is that this car is being used for TESTING purposes. The color of the vehicle is irrelevant as the facility does not get to choose which color vehicle they receive, Germany sends what they want to send. There is no longer any reason for full body camoflage since they already released official photos of the upcoming car but they still cover the roundels because it still hasn't officially been released and technically not a BMW just yet.

They're testing the cars aswell as the production. The pre-production is the last step before real series production starts. So they're producing cars as they would do with customer cars. If they only produced black cars, that wouldn't be a real test for the later series production. That's one side. The other side is the socalled "customer-oriented" test. BMW employees get these cars to drive and have to say when there are any faults left (caused by faulty development which shouldn't happen in that late stage OR caused by faulty production which could happen). The more they drive the better is it to rule out all the possible errors. Besides that there are still some tests/development to be made (maybe for the new transmission maybe for the latest fine setting in suspension or other things), for which also preproduction cars are used. Hope that helps... Best regards, south |

Awesome find. Thanks for sharing. Made my workday..... can't wait to go home and watch the vids you captured.... That bamboo beige doesn't look too shabby. I was really wanting to get the fox red interior for the alpine white exterior, but you think a red interior is saying too much on a white car? Perhaps beige is a lil less decadent? |

I can tbelive they had the car out in the open like that. So many people cant wait to see it and they are just driving it around like nothing. I think that BMW just wanted to show off there wonderfull car and with the bright color they sure succeded.

Thank you for the post, Hans. For some reason the Geneva photos were much more impressive thatn anything since!
So glad to hear the engine has that sexy high pitch italian style V8 sound and not the deep Detroit gurgle. |

Nice pics and vids ...
My guess it they are testing the car ... one big test at these final stages is fuel test. Since CA gets such shitty gas they are probly double checking the 91 oct in the new motor. Just like when the Evo came out they had to make adjustments to the ECU for America's crappy gas. ________ Kawasaki KZ900B Last edited by Vegas_Sirk; 01-19-2011 at 06:48 AM.. |

Quality, every automaker builds "Prototype/Pilot" cars on the line (usually at different stages of pre-production). Once a car is publically released to the media there is no reason to cover it with camo. Debadging a car costs nothing so some companies (like BMW do that), others don't even bother stripping off badges. The only cars that are all black or all red (for crashing, red shows the best) are the EARLIEST of Pilot builds. For example Chrysler has 4 "stages" of Pilot, S0, S1, S2, and V1. BMW probably does something similar. S0's are the first Pilot's and are usually hand assembled or built on a "Pilot" line at a Tech Center (on a semi-real assembly line). S1, S2 and V1 (V1 is actually production) are all built in the assembly plant. When building S1's and S2's you have to test ALL aspects of the car and production of the car, so they paint the cars different colors to test how the equipment works. They also like to see the cars with all the colors, and if you are going to build a car (which costs money) then you might as well give it to Engineers to test. |
