The reality is that alot of the disposable income money is coming from the Baby Boomer generation which is now starting to settle into retirement. They're cooler and younger in mindset than the previous generation who used to tool around in (pre-CTS) Caddies and Lincolns.
They've got the cash. They want something sporty with status. So they take the groovy Bimmer with the nifty holes in the hood! It's the expensive one so they know it's good. If you ask me, God bless 'em. If they can contribute to keeping BMW M-sales afloat (and thereby M-Development afloat), we all benefit.

This is the funniest thing I have heard in a while! I hate talking to people about the car who are absolutely clueless.....You should have asked him if his car can go forward and backwards too because yours can. lol Or ask him if the front of his car lights up at night too lol

he looked like the expert, I thought he was gonna say " your right rear tire needs 2more PSIs" I actually remembered another piece too: Him: is there any differences between my 2009 and 2011. Me: I don't think so, I believe the 2008 had an old IDrive that they updated in our models. Him: yeah, that's good, makes the car go smoother (moving his right hand like an airplane taking off)

I saw an older asian lady (maybe in her 50's-60's) driving an M5 around town. She looked completely out of place in that car. I was sure she just asked to buy the most expensive 5 series BMW made. Probably happens a lot.

Moral of the story... If M3's were only available in stick shift this sort of conversation would never happen.
The consequences have already been eloquently stated: |

. How many cylinders. . What country is it made in. . 0 - 60 and 1/4 mile times. . Type of leather. . Difference between SMG and DCT. . Type of oil. . etc. Then, if you pass the written, you take a practical test in a 6MT 335 before you get to test drive an M3. Then, finally, if you pass that they run the credit check. And if you fail you only get two more tries, each at least a month apart. Hey, I could start a one-day, written test prep course for potential M3 buyers. Sounds like a plan. I like your idea. Cheers.

I bet some of these owners bought the car because their kid talked them into it.
