1,200 mile service.....scary!
So I called my dealer yesterday and spoke with a SA....I told him I had an '08 M3 and it was time to bring it in for my 1,200 mile service.
He says, "Oh, your first service isn't due until 15,000 miles". lol I was like..."mmmm, not with the M". He puts me on hold and picks up after a minute. He then offers to service the car the next day, saying it will take a couple hours. I am already worried enough about the DCT fluid change issue. Being as the SA had no idea a 1,200 mile service was required on the M, I have little confidence, and frankly, am a bit worried. I am taking it in tomorrow and have the bulletin printed out for him to see that they are NOT to change the oil in the DCT. Also, when I called, I told him I had a few other warranty related items I wanted done and also the install and coding of the alarm. He said, "no problem, we can write that up when you get here". I was like, "Don't you need to alot time for this stuff? Don't you need to know what I want done first?" He said, "No, we can take care of that when you get here". WTF? MAYBE they may need to order a part or two to get my car done the first time? MAYBE I don't want to have to come back AGAIN to get some piddly crap done to my car? Never even crossed his mind. I will let you know how it goes tomorrow, but I know for a fact this is the first DCT car they will have serviced. I am pretty worried about all of this. I don't have a lot of confidence in them servicing the DCT in the first place, but the feedback I got from the SA made it even worse. Oh boy....

don't go there. I'm always amazed at just how little both service and sales people know about the cars.

Wow. Just Wow. Can't believe there are still dealerships out there with SA's that don't know WTF to do with M-DCT cars (or E9x M3's in general). If you do end up going to this dealership, be sure to take the service bulletin with you (RE: M-DCT fluid).
I just had my service done about a little over a week ago and the car has been flawless.

Man I would be worried about a SA like that. I want my SA to inspire confidence not increase worry. Let us know how much it is to get the alarm activated. I plan on doing that when I get my car.

Everything maybe ok, but off the bat you know the guy is completely clueless. Schedule with a different SA at least. Ask others also if you can about service at that particular dealership, you never know what can pop up.

Tim,
Come down to Elk Grove. I know they serviced a DCT car already. I believe they are aware of the bulletin on not to change the transmission oil. Ask for Bob. But, make sure you check the oil reservoir cap is on right!

It should only take ~1 hour of labor according to PCD (labor rate = $70/hr), but some dealers are charging 2-3 hrs.

Getting your 1200mile service is just like playing Russial Roulette.

I'm disappointed in BMW NA. They need to be on top if this to ensure that their brand equity is not tarnished by ignorant dealers destroying peoples cars.
The problem is that is is probably lest cost to BMW / Dealers to cover the losses, than to actually bring all the dealers up to a high level of service. |

Are you talking about actually installing the alarm or just coding it after it has already been installed? Just coding it only takes a few minutes. If a dealer is charging 2-3 hours for coding, time to find a different dealer. If the car is already in for something else anyway, some woudn't charge anything for that.

Its a good thing too..... I dropped the car off for the 1,200 mile service this morning. I gave the service writer my list of things to do....2nd in line was install and code alarm. He called me back and said......we only have time to do your 1,200 mile service. The rest of the stuff will take too much time and we only have your car scheduled for xxx time. So, NO to the alarm, no to the radio problems, no to the windshield trim that was scratched on delivery, no to the trim that was spotted up on delivery, no to the stalling issue, no to the ignored shift commands, etc. Here's what really pisses me off about this....when I called to make the appt., I told the guy 1,200 mile service, and a few other items. Asked if he needed to know what they were..answer was no, we can take care of that when you arrive. I got to thinking...and called back. Are you sure you don't want my list of things I want done when I come in, I think they will require some time to complete? Answer was no, no worries, we will write it up when you arrive. I already PAID for the alarm and it is sitting in the special order bin...guess it will sit there a bit longer now. I am not too happy to have to bring my car in AGAIN. I have too much crap to do to have to deal with this...I am not very happy right now. Alarm: He said the last alarm install they did went great, but the coding took 6 HOURS to get right. I was like, screw that, lets schedule an appt for next week and you can give me a loaner too, just in case. I cannot afford to be without a ride as I have too many other commitments...if the car aint ready when promised, I am screwed. So............hearing that they have been having coding issues, I am glad I am letting them install it. Yeah, its just plugging in a few wires, etc., but I will be damned if they are going to blame me if it does not code correctly.

If this does not go well today, I will give them a shot, or Roseville. Many years ago, when I used Niello, I was not happy at all with the service department. But, being as it was several years ago, I decided to give them a try again. So far, it is off to a rough start, but they can still make it right. I will let you know how it goes!

The issue is that the alarm installation requires them to merge the alarm software with the on-board software then completely re-load the onboard software (which controls basically every function of the car). Once that's done, they have to test everything -- it does take hours. However, the alarm works great, and I'm glad I had the install done. Just another layer of assurance for me. The install was covered in the price of the alarm which was $645.

Ya. I ran into issues with the alarm coding. Even now, my car will always flash the lights on locking/unlock or arm/disarm.
Before the alarm was installed, this door locking setting was fully controllable via i-Drive, as it should be. It appears the alarm coding messed something up, and the BMW center have tried to remedy it multiple times, but couldn't figure it out. PUMA case raised months ago ... but still no solution from BMW. |
