I did. My dashcam has an ignition on tap (always on), a parked ignition off tap (motion/shock activated), and a chassis ground.

On my '13 E92 DCT car, I tapped the cigarette lighter fuse for ignition on fuse, and tapped fuse 3 (unused) for the standby power source with ignition off.

I'm also looking into a dashcam but would like it to work even when the car is not on. Any DIY would be great but not trying to go as far as this...

A simple plug and play into cigarette lighter would be fine or even better yet if a solar/battery one was any good.

Was thinking of a GoPro but 2.5 hrs max battery life just isn't going to cut it. Any feedback/suggestions appreciated!

I am using a ThinkWare F50 with the optional hardwire kit. (It comes with a cigarette lighter kit that works just fine.)

I used a fuse tap for constant recording while the vehicle's ignition is on.
I used a fuse tap for automatic start/stop recording while the vehicle's ignition is off, which is controlled by settings on the F50 unit. (Motion detection and also vibration/shock detection.)

The video is 1080p, audio is good, and the video quality is excellent in daytime, handles transitions between shadows/light very well, and has surprisingly good night time video as well.

All wires are easily hidden without disassembling the body panels and I was able to mount it behind my driver's side of the rear view mirror, so I can't even see it while I'm driving, except for the little green light that says it's on.

I'd buy this exact setup again.
