I'm giving up on keeping a fresh car

After carefully babying the car for two years, I've decided its not worth all the hassle to drive it like its a super car. I would park it in the middle of nowhere in the parking lot so I don't get a ding; I would put bumper blockers on it when I park it on the street, I would always park careful and make sure my mint forgestars don't get a scuff. After my friend bend my wheel and my dad scuffed my wheels, and someone dinged my side, and someone scratched my front bumper I've given up. Its a waste of time Anyone feel the same. Oh, and I now feel that all my mods were a waste of money.

I have felt the same for each and every car I have owned, however I can never EVER stop getting a car that I don't care about.

I joke that my next car will be a hail damaged Honda. Looks like hell, but will run forever.

u ever drive someone elses car that they never take care of? my younger brothers car is a POS but the few times i drove it i loved being able to park that car anywhere and not being paranoid about someone dinging the car...i'll park in a spot i barely fit into cuz who gives a crap...so liberating

My moment came when I was at the dealer getting my windshield replaced. The car came out with a deep 8 in long scratch along the rear wheel arch.

It's still the only blemish on my car after 60K miles

It really just depends on your mindset.

Control what you can control. I take care of my cars (not to the point of lugging around extra padding or armor for parking) fairly thoroughly. Park away, drive on the road and not the curbs. No drinks or eating in the car.

In the end though, you have to have the outlook that everything you do is preventative. Once something happens you can't undo it, so if it ever does there is no point in getting demoralized because eventually something will find its way to your cars bumper/fender. There are too many variables to ever be able to keep it mint forever.

All your work goes towards keeping it mint as long as you can, as thats really all you can control.

If you have family members that you lent your car to that mess it up, the solution to that is easy.

Congrats. you are an adult now.

I still park to avoid dings, and park carefully, beyond that there isn't much you can do.

Oh, and you should try a carwash, you'll love it!

Yes, thats exactly what I've been thinking. Tired of spending over an hour washing it in my garage every week.

I started slowly giving up after my drivers door got a 3 inch long scratch from some moron in a parking lot and then 3 weeks later the same door gets egged on top of the same spot and chips my paint.

I agree with you. I don't even participate in conversations with my friends about who's car is faster and who beat who, I just say Im not interested. I feel like Im ready to spend all this time on something more productive.

I almost felt bad for the 335i, (got it for the wife) I don't believe I ever hand washed it, I only popped the hood once, just to say that I did it and to try to find the turbos (i didn't).

In contrast, I hand washed, polished, and waxed the hell out of the 1981 Jeep that was my first car.

I've been there for a while. The m3 made it hard to not care. I've had it for about 2.75yrs and as of a few months ago, I don't care anymore.

Yes, mods are a retarded waste of money. They didn't seem like it until I realized that I want other more expensive things in life. The car is just transportation. Sure i still love cars, but not more than the really important things in life.

I cannot wait to get an suv at lease-end in august. Then i will not have to deal with the ridiculousness that is having a dog, playing hockey, and trying to go skiing in a coupe BMW.

Once I get myself an American made suv, I will instantly feel like I'm helping this miserable economy, and at the same time making my life easier with carrying things and not stressing about things I cannot control (dings, steep driveways, etc.)

don't have a dog or play hockey, but i go snowboarding all the time and could not take E92 to the mountains, so i had to either rent or borrow people's cars all the time. it ended up being sooooo freaking expensive in the long run, plus I had to give my E92 to people i borrowed cars from, so my wheels where completely trashed.

Now I have an X3 and the only mods I was able to find for it were black grilles, angel eyes and vinyl stickers for the roundels. lol

It's hard not to baby a $50k+ car when you first buy it. But typically, as the years go by and the car depreciates in value, so does my desire to take care of it.
