more detail

Can you provide more detail as to the cost of this testing, and the process for doing it? How much oil do you have to collect and ship, time to perform the study, cost, etc.

I'd consider blanking out your personal details myself.

Just register your information and they will send the collection box, it's pretty easy.

And about the charge, I think it's $25, also, if you change the oil at the dealer, then tell your SA to collect a sample, just give them the container; my SA got the oil during the oil change.

For comparison

For a reference point I submitted my numbers. It is an '11.

I have no idea how to read the data ... but the report came back favorable (or so they said). I'm left wondering what the reference point is. Is it other S65's? Is it from a Ford F150, Datsun 510, Buick Regal, Ferrari Testarossa, Crown Vic? All cars put together? What years, what mileage range?

It's like going to the doctor and having him give you some random number for something which means nothing to you without a reference point. I realize there are a lot of variables, but having a benchmark, like lower than some number is good would be nice. Or higher is better...something.

82% of all statistics are made up.

^^^ Then don't worry about it if you don't:

1. know how to read it
2. don't care about statistics

The "UNIT/LOCATION AVERAGES" column refers to other S65s. The "UNIVERSAL AVERAGES" column refers to other gasoline engines. Here's Blackstone's official explanation:

Thanks for the link. I did a little searching on the forum and found one report which said their averages are based on a 5,500 mile run (on the oil I think).

Everything looks good so I'm happy now.

I don't believe this statement is correct. The UNIT/LOCATIONAL Averages are your values from your engine averaged out. This is why they are identical to his current sample, because there is only one point to average, so they are equal.

That has been my understanding as well.

I believe the universal averages are all gasoline engines. The unit averages are specific to your own engine, so if you keep getting samples over time you'll be able to track the health of your engine and Blackstone will be able to separate and call out trends in the numbers as distinct from outlier samples. However, the human write-ups that Blackstone provides often have information from other S65s incorporated into the evaluation. I got one sample a while ago during the Great Bearing Scare, and they came back saying it looked "Ok" based on their averages. When I replied expressing some disappointment over that assessment given that I change oil at 7500 miles and always drive conservatively while the engine is cold, but conceding that the sample had 6 track days on it and the car in general saw 6-8 track days per year, they said, "Well given that usage, your sample is very good!"

I stand corrected... after looking at my first Blackstone report, this is the case. Thanks for the clarification!
