Question for M owners
Guys, I love my e92 but may sell it for the new M3. I'd appreciate any feedback from you M guys in regard to the particulars of the M cars. Is it too much car? Is it difficult to upkeep? Any regrets for purchasing an M car? Mine would be a manual tranny. What can I say, I'm feeling the need for speed!

Interesting to know - thanks for pointing that out.
I second Greg's sentiments about the car being reliable. Mine has had a total of 3 minor electrical glitches, and I needed an alternator at 95k miles. Other than, that no problems. Car still fires up like it was new. |

My e46 M3 was trouble free until some idiot ran into and totalled it in the parking lot. They are great. Can't wait for my baby to be resurrected in a better/stronger/faster form. Also, the great thing about M cars... well actually BMWs in general is that there are many very knowledgeable enthusiasts you can turn to if trouble arises.

I've purchased a e46 m3 coupe back in 2004 and haven't had any real issues with it whatsoever. I also owned a e46 330ci prior to that. Thats one good thing about the <e46> M3 is that it can be used for everyday driving. The ride can be a bit harsh and noisy on bad pavement but I hope with the new EDC system for the e92 m3, this can be overcome.
Mines a manual gearbox, and I've found that as the car has got a bit older, and with more miles on the clock the gearbox just seems to be getting better and better all the time. I use my M3 everyday to get to work, and then at weekends I've got a bike rack on the thing with 3 mountain bikes ! Its good stuff. Gas can be *really* bad though when you've got the bikes on the roof though ;-) Yes, no regrets about getting the M3, and am looking forward to the new one .... when it finally arrives here next year. |

Thanks for the input guys! I may order one for a Jan delivery. Just have to make sure the ducks are all in a row before I pull the trigger.

Every friday I even detailed my car for 3 hours because I had a bond with it myself... if you get an M car that you truly are waiting for and care about, it will become more than just a car...

I am currently an e90 330 owner having owned a e36 M3 1995 for 12 years and extensively driven an e39 M5. I can say that the 330 is a decent replacement for the e36 (with the sport suspension) but M cars are tuned sooo much better (both power and suspension). I thought my e36 might be too much but I quickly adjusted!! as far as maintinance goes the E36 was the last of the affordable M's the E39 M5 was coming off maintinance freedom and the next service was gonna be $1500 (!!!). My E36 averaged $700 per year (inc tires). I think the V8's with all the electronci systems are gonna be a maintinance hog meaning $$$$$$ once off the maintinance program. Personally I will miss the M 6 cylinder engines if they stop building them. the V8's are not as refined IMO (it's not always about more power)
