Test drove a 1M.. WOW.

I'm picking up my E92 in about 9 days. I'm very excited, but I'm also incredibly excited for the 1M.

The car is like the M3 in most respects except it excels in what the M3 does best. More nimble, and faster.

When I say faster.. I mean on the street. The M3 may have top end pull, but the 1M is a torque monster.

My quick review:

Interior: M3
Sound: M3
Agility: 1M
Daily driving: 1M
Price: 1M
Space: M3
Fun to drive factor: 1M
Looks: M3=1M after driving a white 1M.
I'm getting both: Priceless.

I know this might upset some M3 enthusiasts, but seriously the car is amazingly agile, sounds great, is cheaper than the M3 but does the same job.

for a fellow TCLer. Both are great cars, that appeal to different perspectives. To have both is great and I'm jealous! The 1M is going to be a great car to hoon around in, no doubt. Get some track pads and good brake fluid and enjoy the hell out of it on tracks.

And ignore the 1M isn't a true M car BS. It's M all the way.

If I didn't already have two other two door cars, and didn't need a sedan, I'd have taken the 1M over the M3. But the E90 M3 fit my needs and "wants" perfectly.

Sounds like a great car, and an ideal choice for lots of people. But how easy is it to get one? Aren't they limiting production pretty tightly?

The 1M is about getting a kick for a lower-then-M3 price.
If you can't tell the difference between the two .. then congrats, you are a 1M owner!
Not to beat a dead horse, but alot of M1 owners are young, and they really don't know better.. (spare the return fire, I'm just making an observation)

Car Mag still picks the M3 read on

1st the 1M is not faster read below. After a chip I bet. The motor is not special just hand me down. Would I own one YES & YES. My fav M car was my Z3 M coupe I loved that car & should have kept it. I have owned many M cars I wish I could own them all

One mag just tested them against each-other & they picked the M3

But is it better? Lieberman and I agree: No. This big, heavy, and expensive M3, with its unflappable confidence and lascivious powertrain, is the car we want, the car we'll remember as the best of the naturally aspirated Ms. It's the one we'll tell young gearheads about in a few decades with the same fondness and reverence as given its E30 ancestor. The 1M doesn't measure up to the M3's standard. Few cars do.

I won't return fire, I'll just let you know that you should word your statements more wisely in the future. I'm 25 and have more traditional and futuristic respect for the M brand than most anyone my age or older. The 1M isn't just for the younger buyer, it's for the M faithful who love a lightweight M car with an inline-6. The N54 is similar to what may very well be used in the next M3. The 1M is a testing bed...

If the M3 didn't have a sedan, I would have bought the 1M, as that's what I wanted. I love my M3, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy a 1M, and believe me, I know better. The M3 is one of the best all-round cars I've ever driven, but the 1M is something different.

The 1M is more dealing with it's heritage than the M3 itself!

Dang, this comparison has been discussed and compared many times. Both are great cars. Just buy the one you like and be happy. They are like apple and orange. Both are fruits and they have their fans, but the M3 is the standard that every other car tries to meet/beat.

I imagine, though, that the 1M is going to be the auto-x'ers car of choice.

Looks? M3
Project Car? (tuner) 1M
Show Car (speakers/style/etc)? M3
Rarity? 1M
MPG? 1M
Fun? 1M
Swag/Badge? M3
Sound? M3
Class? M3 (I wouldn't show up to the fancy event in a 1M)
Cost? 1M
Maintenance? Tie (HPFP for the 1M?)
Practicality? M3
Daily Driver? M3
Daily Racer? 1M
Track Racer? 1M

Different strokes for different folks I guess.

I would personally pick the 1M and crank the power up reasonably and give it a diet too...make it a track car and get into tracking because of it.

who cares, both are great cars. if you can afford the M3 go ahead, if you want to spend less, get the 1M. Both great cars for the price, and you get what you paid for, for both.

Just a quick note that Evo magazine (July 2011) has tracked both the 1M and M3 and got essentially identical times. They also like the 1M better overall, while still regarding the M3 as a great car. One of the points they emphasize is that the flatter torque curve of the 1M is more usable on public roads.

I think you meant fatter, not flatter.

I meant flatter in the sense of less peaked, though I guess fatter can convey the same idea.

What a collection of cars! Must be hard to decide what to drive everyday

To me, if you track a car, the ability for the engine to pull hard right up to the redline is a must. I love my 996 4S, but it wimps out the last 1500 RPMs - RPMs that can be useful on the track. Just my 0.02.

They had a 1M near me when I bought the E92, but to me the v8 + interior/trunk space trump it all.

The whole DD arguement / public road thing is ridiculous. Both cars are excellent DD cars far better than 90% of cars out there.

+1

I really like the idea of the 1M and if it was a better looking car I would be all over it. It really is too bad that it isn't an attractive car (IMO) because the performance/value proposition is extremely compelling.
