Come on man. Do think BMW would set the redline so high that you're going to hurt the car???

You need to read the manual and figure out what's goin' on.

No, you definitely did NOT hurt your car. 5 to 8 grand is the M's bread and butter. If you want a more exciting car in that range... you need to look at Ferrari.

After driving this car for a few months, I can honestly say that BMW really has done a great job with this car.

+1 - How can you buy an m3 and wonder about basic stuff like rev limiter?

Sounds like you have the OCD like I do.

I was sitting at a red light in DC this evening and got to ruminating about how pissed off I was at a client when the light caught me by surprise. I stalled and got the mandatory honk from the guy behind me, which added to my fervor to get the engine running and get going.

The engine was fully heated, and I didn't redline (I hit about 5,000 rpm), but I did stall / start the engine / rev / and pop the clutch much more quickly than I usually would. (I was also turning, so I think this was the first time my LSD got awakened.) I'm also sure the guy behind me was thinking "what a jackass."

It bothered me for a while, wondering whether I had screwed anything up--still bothers me a little. Everything seems to be fine, and I didn't grind any gears or anything, but the car is brand new to me, and I just hate to screw up like that.

My continuing anger at my client has allowed me to mostly forget about the stall though.

I hit the rev limiter tonight also, and I don't care. The rev limiter is there for a reason. I just don't understand how people are hitting the rev limiter in DCT, wtf?!?!

you should sell it now because if you wait one or two weeks, you might start having leakage from the throttle bodies because of the redline. once that starts it will be really tough to sell, and very expensive to fix.

Or you can get a sports bike and rev to 16000 rpm. Just a thought.

No kidding, I wouldn't pay more than $500 for an M3 that got unintentionally redlined
Once you redlined there's no going back
