wheels with two holes for valve stems
hey guys, forgive me for being such a newb. i ordered a set of aftermarket rims, just got them in the other day. when i took them out of the box to take a look i noticed they had two holes drilled in each barrel. i call the manufacturer to ask about this. i was told one is for TPMS and the other for the valve stem.. but i looked at the toms and to me doesn't the valve stem mount right to the sensor? im am quite lost. do i have to mount to valve stems? any help on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

That's for two valve stems. They're 180 degrees from each other so that you can flush the tire (i.e. with Nitrogen). You'll see it sometimes on racing rims. Kosei and a lot of other Japanese manufacturers do it.

My Enkei wheels also came with two holes.
As Parkanzky said, it is to allow purging the wheel/tire when you fill with Nitrogen, at least that is what I was told. Not that I do so though . |

It's OK. you'll see this on some 3-piece wheels, HRE being one of them. My HRE's were also drilled twice

Yes, totally normal. I would add that the sensor should go in the angled valve hole at the edge of the wheel. If it is mounted to the hole that goes straight down into the barrel of the wheel, it will be nearly impossible to mount a tire without breaking the sensor. The body of the sensor should be pretty flat against the wheel when installed.

While nothing to worry about and and can be normal, it is pretty sad when a manufacturer doesn't even know what they are for or at least misinforms

Did you ask them to do this? My guess is no so more than likely they are recycling something someone else didn't want with barrel/lip and giving it to you. Also, beware of the powdercoating job....

Wow, I'm surprised that more people are misinformed about this. A lot of three piece wheels are done like this (or at least should be so that you can install TPMS easily and securely). As stated earlier, the second hole is drilled near the angled drop in the wheel (called a center drop or a drop center). The center drop is used to help mount a tire. If you have ever tried to mount a tire (or watched one being mounted) that doesnt have a deep drop it can be a real pain in the ass and you will typically see multiple techs working on the same wheel/tire to get it to seat. Anyway, the second hole allows the TPMS to sit normally as it "needs" to sit on the angled portion of the drop (as you will see in the pics that are posted) so that it isnt damaged when the tire is being seated or damaged during driving. One hole is drilled on the flat, smooth part of the barrel and one hole is drilled on the angled portion of the barrel. You use the flat, smooth part to install the air valve (which is typically a curved extended valve that extends outward toward the outer edge of the wheel). The second hole, drilled on the angle drop is for mounting the TPMS. Sometimes they use an air valve stem to do it (which isnt always ideal) and sometimes they use a nut/bolt with rubber washers very similar to the construction of an air valve stem.
As others have stated this is completely normal. Last edited by MRG Race Co; 09-13-2012 at 06:16 PM.. |
