Ipod integration

I am doing ED on my E92 M3 in 2 weeks and want to bring my Ipod along of course. My ED welcome kit says to remember to bring along the BMW-supplied power cord (Y-cable) to connect the Ipod but my salesman says that with the latest version of the software this is not needed. He claims that the USB cable the Ipod came with is all I need to hook it up now.

Does anyone know if this is correct?

You need the Y cable which is what the brochure mentions.

Guys, when you say integration, what do you mean? Ive been using the Y connector since day one (which came with car)..I can scroll through my music via idrive and I can scroll thru my phone /address contacts with idrive as well, is that what you consider integration or is there more you can achieve?
Cause if that’s all it does then yeah, just connect your ipod/iphone with the Y cable and that’s it.

One more related question: connecting the iphone with the Y cord requires 2 hands (sometimes I can do it with one hand) so if you forget to do that before you start driving, you'll be waiting for a red light or so..so I thought I'll add the iphone/ipod docking station inside the arm rest and I was told, NO CAN DO (by SA)..is that true
It'll make sliding it in place a one handed easy process

They're about $115 here in Canada so that means it should be about $75 or $80 for you in the US.

Outrageous price for a simple interconnect cable.

It should be around 60 bucks. Make sure you have the 6FL option by checking to see if there is a usb port in the center console.

This will be my good deed for the day, and I'm bored. Ok, so to clear things up, and to allow you the best ED experience possible, DO bring your apple ipod cable AND the bmw supplied Y cable, just in case. They both provide the same functionality except for one difference, whether or not you get the album art to display on the nav screen. The Y cable was introduced with early 2011 models without the combox(album art capability), solely for the purpose of eliminating the need for an iphone cable and an aux cable. Hence, the Y design. When september production cars(2011.5) were rolling out with the combox installed(for album art), the Y cable was supplied but did not enable the album art to be shown. ONLY the apple ipod cable could trigger it. However, I have a mid september build car with the combox and my ipod integration with the apple cable is glitchy. Sometimes it connects, and sometimes it doesn't. The weather or outside temperature seems to have an effect on it at times. Still haven't been to the dealer yet. But with Y cable, it works everytime...just no album art.

Soooo, to sum up, bring both just in case your apple cable isn't consistent. But album art is def a nice touch and something you want to see in your new car!

Just picked up my car, plugged in my iPhone4 and the radio says "cable is not supported". So do I need to buy the Y cable?

No...

- 3-Series/M3 production before 09/10 = use BMW OEM iPod cable
- 3-Series/M3 production on or after 09/10 = use Apple iPod cable

Mine is after 9/10.

I am using an aftermarket Dynex cable. Its white, USB on one end, iPod connector on the other...do I need to use a REAL Apple iPod cable?

Thank you!!! I spent all night searching and trying different things to make this work. My dealer gave me a y-cable and that is why I haven't been able to get album art!!
