The five step method says:
"DAY FIVE:
a. FIRST RULE OF BRAKING: ALWAYS BRAKE IN A STRAIGHT LINE.
b. Never brake while turning. "

This is true for the novice, EXCEPT in accident avoidance. The first thing they teach you at the BMW Performance Center is a panic stop in a turn. I can't believe he writes it as an absolute, but I guess he's writing for novices.

For track driving, there's "trail braking". You're not ready for that yet, but if you stay serious about AX and track driving you'll learn it soon enough.

It was triggering on the corners, the back end was sliding and when I try and accelerate out of the corner it was like being in 4th gear.

So, it came on to kill the rotation, rather to keep you from accelerating, but then when you tried to accelerate you couldn't add power because it deemed you at the limit, right?

If so, then it'll always be a negative. The car needs to rotate some in AX, so if it's going to limit your power application due to a little slipping, it just won't work. So, since you don't have MDM, I think you'll just need turn off DSC.

For me, with MDM, the extra confidence to take slaloms and chicanes very agreessively should be good for a tenth or two.

even the MDM is a big cut in power and control.

in autocross there should be no concern about confidence - there is nothin to hit but a cone. it should be balls out for the win or spin and fail.

I also believe in win or spin, but that (spinning) should only happen once or twice per season. If the MDM is constantly kicking in, I guarantee you, then you losing time. That's not the fast way around.

It's not about being brave, it's about being smart. No matter what this guy says, there's always a little pucker factor when you're going into a 62 mph kink at 70 mph. Also, at the end of a long slalom, when oscilation starts to grow, getting a little inside rear brake at just the right time can be VERY useful. With a 100% win or spin attitude, you either slow down to catch it, or spin. Neither is fast.

Win or spin is an approach that a novice should avoid. It really does slow you down and when you spin two or three times per event you come off looking like a dickhead. Your right foot should have a direct line to your brain. If it seems that your penis is directing your right foot, then you're doomed to be slow.

Win or spin comes into play as an advance autocrosser is competing with the elite of his or her club, trying to gain a final hundreth. There are times where risks are worth taking, particularly if you've laid down a solid first run. I find that kinks, slaloms and trail braking into U-turns are incredible opportunitities to let it hang out to gain time. Just realize that 10-10ths and too fast are very close together.
