You said you can't tell the difference between the 19s and the 20s. I said that the BMW marketing people were right in marketing the cars to people who can't tell the difference. They are marketing cars to people who prize form over function. This sells more M3s overall and forces the normal people to suffer through the myriad threads about 20 inch wheels, color matched reflector replacements, multi-piston brake upgrades and cars lowered to the point that they drive like shit. Tires also make a difference in ride quality / performance. I'm sure that you are running Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires since you are the ultimate M3 performance aficionado. I digress... I switched from 20's with Pirelli P-Zero Nero's to 19's with Yoko AD08's and the ride is actually rougher with the 19's. This is of course due to the stiffness of the AD08 side-walls. I would be willing to be that even YOU, the ultimate M3 driver, would have a hard time telling the difference on public streets.

Tires make a difference... AD08s are one of the harshest street tires you can put on the M3... it's almost a competition tire

18" vs. 19" I feel a huge difference... PS2 vs. PS2... car is noticeably quieter and smoother on 18's.

After going to aftermarket 18's on Michelin Pilot Super Sport I have zero desire to go any larger diameter... the car is smooth and performs incredibly (lost more than 20 pounds of unsprung weight from stock)

Everyone has different preferences... larger wheels do make the car perform worse and ride worse... but in some peoples eyes they look better... so more power to them...

In my opinion tires will make a bigger impact on ride quality than 19" vs. 20" ever will. That being said, one mans "harsh ride" is another mans "comfortable ride" so its all subjective.

Hey Joe, have you ever heard, "To each his own"? Your E90 is lookin whack with those donuts, too. You might as well put a lift kit on your M3 and go off-roading with it. If you're gonna rock 18's, at least make it look coo .

I do agree with cars being lowered too much and having a negative effect on handling. I had that issue with my H&R springs but have swapped them out.

I havent felt a decrease in performance with 20s though, which can weigh the same as stock 18s or 19s. As long as you have enough sidewall to roll through turns then it seems to work out just fine.

I asked "Radiation Joe" the same question...Explain why 20" wheels decrease handling performance on a vehicle. I've heard everything else but never that. If true, I'm really interested in why. Contact patch smaller? Wheels are heavier, so an increase in unsprung mass? Etc....
I received no explanation from him. Joe, if you're gonna keep talking shit about 20's, at least educate at the same time. Geez.

I'll chime in here. I roll on dubs (HRE P40) in summer and 19's (stock ZCP wheels) in winter. I can tell a ride comfort difference for sure, but not huge. Yes the 20's are a little harsher but I don't feel any performance difference. I weighed each wheel when the stock ZCP's had the PS2 tires mounted (snow tires are on them now which makes them more heavier) and it was actually a bit heavier by a few lbs than the 20" HRE with the same tire. I know unsprung weight blah blah blah but just get a quality forged wheel brand (HRE!) so you won't have to sacrifice performance for the awesome looks of the dubs!
