Link computer to TV

I download alot of tv shows and movies to watch on my computer. Only thing is, the screen is rather small (I dont remember, but I believe its either a 19 or 21 inch). I am planning on getting either a new PC (building it) or a laptop (most likely hp dv7t). Would I be able to run a cord from the laptop to a 36" flatscreen, or do I need a specific video card to do that?

Yep, it's possible. There are adapter cables these days for almost any situation it seems. Check your TV to make sure it has the proper input for either a computer video input or S-video input. The video card plug will have 15 pins I believe.

that computer has hdmi port. you should be able to just use the hdmi port from the computer and hopefully you have one on your TV

I download shows and stuff (movies...) to my laptop. And great thing about it that my laptop has a HDMI port. And so does my tv... which makes everything easier.

But there's this device you can buy... that connects to the tv. And all you do is move files to that device wirelessly

Most if not all recent laptops which run upwards of $500 or so will come with an HDMI-OUT port, and most if not all televisions that are recent(within 5-6 years) and are HDTVs, they would have an HDMI-IN.

However, if you don't have this, just grab an S-video out and the head-phone to RCA out (the red/white wires)

My laptop has an HDMI out (Vaio). I think most of them shipping now do.

It works pretty well, but my TV usually needs to calibrate once to show the signal properly.

I wish it also functioned as an HDMI in, so when the GF demands control of the tv for Grey's Anatomy I can still get some Call of duty in. (she doesn't care, the entire world could be ending and she wouldn't care as long as it did it after Grey's is over).

The annoying problem I run into is the colors end up looking all off, and I have no way to store "color calibration" schemes on my laptop. Other than that it's fine to watch TV/Streaming video/dvd's on.

How is the quality of the video feed? If I wanted to play a computer game, would it be better to just use the screen, or does it work well on the tv?

What about tv shows/movies downloaded via torrent? How is that quality on tv?

it depends on what resolution you're playing on, but I think it would be better than a 17" screen :P

given that you have a wireless mouse and keyboard

Do you have a PS3 or Xbox 360 hooked up to the TV?
If so, that's what I use to play TV shows or movies from my computer to my big screen. I can stream 1080p through either gaming system. Sometimes with really high b/r movies I have to download them to the PS3 hard drive or I get stuttering.

My HP laptop has a HDMI out. I just download BR torrents and watch it on my TV.
