What should I buy? M3, M5, or 550i?

Hey guys I am in a bit of a dilemma here on what should be my next purchase in about 2 years. My criteria are as follows: kids within 5 years (4 doors), still would like to autocross, needs to be ok on gas mileage (sorry e60 m5) and about 45,000 in price.

My first choice is an e90 M3. The reason being for the total drivability, I can still go autocrossing and the vast tuner parts that are available. Downside: gas, I drive a lot and there is a new model on the horizon.

My next choice would be the new m5. Now if we look at the old m5’s depreciation in a 3 year time frame it drops the cars price to about 45,000 (give or take), which is about what I want to spend. I am hoping the new m5 will drop to around that price. Downside: can’t predict price

My last choice would be the new F10 550i. This is my last choice and probably the most sensible one. Great horsepower and torque, decent gas mileage and not a bad looking car. Downside: I don’t think this would make a good autocrosser and when put up to the m3 or the new m5 I might regret the purchase.

Let me know what you think.

New M5 won't be had for anywhere near $45,000.

I think for 45k you should be looking at e90 m3 or used 550i. The new m5 won't be in that price range until around 2016 or later.

Even today, I still find the E60 M5 to be quite expensive if you find one in good shape. You're probably looking at a E90 M3 or 550i. But I think it's a bit too early. You could start preparing your finances but who knows what will be out in two years?

I take it you are in Europe right now. My post is based on that. Here is what I would do if I was you (knowing that gas prices in Europe for Premium gas are running slightly over $12- per US gallon).

1) I would get a very economical car for the needs for the next 2 years.

2) I would wait until the new M3 comes out (most properly a I6 twin turbo).

3) Read about reaction in this forum here about the new generation M3.

4) Then I would decide if I get the new M3 generation or

5) Pick up a slightly used M3 V8 in the USA ***

Now that is what I would do in your case ... good luck in your hunt.

Thank you for your Service and for keeping us all safe !

PS. *** As you well know the BMW is build for high speed Autobahn driving if you pick up a low milage one in the US say a 2012 V8 it would hardly be driven in. unless the car has seen a lot of track time.

I just picked up a CPO E90 M3 and couldn't be happier, price has come down a bit on them too. I say go for one of those bad boys.

If you come across a truckload of those 3 year old F10 M5s for $45k each, let us know. I'd buy one.

Buy a pre-owned E90 M3 now.
Trade up for a pre-owned F80 M3 in a few years.

M3, M3. Any questions?

I think if youre serious about autocross, and need the car for the occasional weekend family hauler for short distances then e90 M3 is your car.

If you're serious about gas mileage - indeed mention it in your wants - M3 isn't your car either. The cars barely get 15 MPG and the low fuel light comes on after burning 12 gallons. Frankly, I wouldn't consider an M3 a good autocross car either. Better of having something smaller and lighter for that, like an old Miata.
Not sure how you could possibly include a 550 and autocross in the same sentence. A big, heavy 4 door sedan is far from something even remotely entertaining on an autocross course.

I totally disagree. If I was in the market for an M5, the low mile Indianapolis Red with 6MT would be at the top of my list.

In regards to M5 depreciation, you need to wait about 5 years for the price to hit the $40k range for a low mileage car. Also remember for the E60 M5, depreciation may have been heavily effected based on the recession.

I suggest getting a E60 M5, the E90 would be too small for teenagers.

good look in, from time to time you'll find a jem in which in the high-mid $40k range you can find a car with less than 29k miles. But they're all out of warranty. Just have to have patience and check the M5, BMWCCA For-Sale forums.

lol - i bought my m5 searching autotrader, then did my own homework.

but yeah, I can see the benefit of looking through the CCA adds b/c of the ownership by an enthusiast.

you're going to be waiting a while for the new M5s price to drop down to that range. At least a couple years. Plus do you really want to buy a first year model? As with the e60, first year models tend to have issues. It isn't until the model matures in its life cycle that problems are addressed and fixed. But hey, your choice.

Too early to make a decision like this. You may or may not be nearer having kids. I will tell you for a fact that once you have kids, ALL your priorities will change, as will just about everything in your life. Autocrossing will not be on the radar screen. If you want a sensible performer with decent room, the 550i is a great choice. The F10 M5 will be a $70,000 car in two years. New this is going to be a $100,000 car when it actually goes on sale in the US.

However, it is too early to really decide given that your life may change a lot and you are looking for one vehicle to meet your needs. It is fun to think ahead, but not realistic.

I really think that non of the cars mentioned are for you. If you want something practical with 4 doors and good on gas for the family, buy a E61 530d or something similar that will get you around in comfort and return good mileage. For autocrossing look into a track purpose car (something small and cheap that will give you tons of fun). You're asking for too much - family hauler, good mileage and autocrossing under $50k.

What I saw there was cars that are 07 and 8 model years or in other words 4 or 5 MY old cars of a model which has saturated its potential market and is now getting ready to be eclipsed by a newer generation car which tends to dampen previous generations sales. He is talking about getting a car that will be at most 2 model years old the first one of which is only going to be four months long of a new generation. This car msrp'ed north of a hundred and is going to have what, between 10 and 30k miles on it? And its going to be obtainable at 45k? I dont think so based strictly on my notgoingtohappenometer.
